  1. P E R U Fishers as Observers SNP Workshops (2011-12) Using the fishing fleet for updating the knowledge on the status of Jack Mackerel (Trachurus murphyi) in the Peruvian EEZ Oscar Ricardo Bernales SNP Vice-President Sociedad Nacional de Pesquería (SNP) (National Fisheries Society) Smart Ocean/Smart Fisheries: Ocean and Climate Observations by Fishing Vessels

  2. INTRODUCTION • Fisheries management is exercised by the government, and supported since the 60’s by the industrial fishing fleet. • The Eureka Program was designed by the Peruvian Marine Research Institute (IMARPE). It is the oldest acoustic marine monitoring program (ICES, 2002) and performed aboard industry vessels. • Furthermore, SNP built up, equipped and gave up to IMARPE the first national research vessel (RV SNP-1). • SNP also contributed to the IMARPE Observers Program both aboard and in landing points. • All this contributed to make Peru, the 1st country in the world between 53 fishing countries regarding fisheries sustainable management (UBC, 2008).

  3. In that context, on 2008, SNP created a Scientific Working Group in order to speed up the daily exchange of information and cooperation with IMARPE. • SNP has developed protocols for data collection, exchange and joint analysis using the best technology and tools available. • SNP recently performed 4 workshops in order to update the knowledge on the status of the Jack Mackerel (JM) fishery with participation of IMARPE, universities and NGOs. • SNP proposed South Pacific Regional Fisheries Management Organization (SPRFMO) to use and apply similar methodologies using data geographically explicit to contribute to the management of high seas fisheries.

  4. International meetings supported by SNP upon the Fishers as Observers concept

  5. Temperature , thermal anomalies and oceanic fronts Daily monitored and based in the IMARPE’s pattern. Data from NOAA.

  6. Fish length frequency and CPUE Total length, CPUE in terms of catch per hours of duration of every trip.

  7. Gravity Centre, Inertia, Geostadistic Abundance Distribution area= inertia around a Centre of Gravity (●) by weeks, size of these squares is proportional to the area. Mean catch per week (C) as a proxy of density. Seven reference zones were created (Paita, Parachique, Chicama, Chimbote, Supe, Callao and Pisco) Abundance = Inertia (I) * Mean Catch (C)

  8. Acoustic Abundance Area: By squares of 6x6 m.ni. (S). Used TS-L relationship by Lillo el at [TS=20*Log(L)-69]. NASC by Cells by Regions harmonized to a vessel speed of 10 Knts. Weight from L-W relationships (w). TS = 20 * Log L - 69 w = a . L b

  9. Tracking changes in JM distribution according to environmental conditions

  10. Cohort Analysis

  11. Jack Mackerel Abundance Distribution

  12. 2011-12 Monthly survey area and JM acoustic biomass related to area of distribution Abundance (t) Explored Area (mn2) Distribution Area (mn2) Abundance (1000 t) Months

  13. Compared all indexes of biomass during 2011-12 Acustic Abundance Geostadistic Abundance Capture Miles of Tons

  14. RECOMMENDATIONS • • The analysis made so far by SNP also demonstrate the residence of a (JM) local sub-population along Peruvian coasts. • All data collected by fishing vessels should be continuously used by scientists of national institutes in order to track changes in JM sub-populations structure at the South Pacific Organization (SPRFMO) level. • The creation of a Fisheries Acoustics Sub-Working Group might be considered by SPRFMO for exchange of data and lessons Learned.
