The Fault Line • Title is analogy for for the division in Israeli society • A fault line is a geological line that marks a fracture in the rock beneath the surface; it also marks a region prone to devastating earthquakes • Beneath Israel’s surface a jagged fault line separates the Israeli Jews and the Palestinian Arabs.
1967 War • Israel takes control of West Bank and the Gaza Strip • Israel is now responsible for the 1.7 million Palestinians in those areas.
Palestinian Assimilation • ”The Israeli Government was able to absorb all the shock waves and tremors that built up along the fault line dividing Palestinians and Jews – so much so that many Israelis, and even some Palestinians, forgot that it was even there” (Friedman 323). • Many Palestinians assimilated into Israeli society to become successful.
Lack of Palestinian Resistance • The Palestinians were unwilling to endure the hardships of civil disobedience. • “It became very convenient for the Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza Strip to accommodate themselves to the Israeli system, even profit from it, while declaring that Liberation was the PLO’s responsibility” (Friedman 330).
Palestinian Life • Israelis would arrest Palestinians in their own homes. • Palestinians were treated as cheap labor • Equated “Palestinian” with “Terrorist”
