What does it mean to be ALIVE? LIFE! What is Life?
What is Biology? • Biologyis the study of all living things • Bio = Life • -ology = study of • Living things are called organisms • Organisms include bacteria, protists, fungi, plants, & animals • Biotic = living or once living • Abiotic = non-living or never alive

Growth and Development • Must be able to grow, develop, increase in size, and change in shape or structure • Example: Frogs lay eggs. The eggs hatch and tadpoles emerge. The tadpoles develop into frogs
Organization (CELLS) • Must have organization • Organelles Cells Tissues Organs Organ Systems • Cell is the smallest unit of life! • Unicellular- made up of one cell • Multicellular- made up of two or more cells
Response to Stimulus • Must be able to respond to the environment to increase likelihood of survival and reproduction • Example: Planarians move from light to dark areas using their eyespots to detect light.
Homeostasis • Must be able to regulate INTERNAL environment to sustain life functions • Example: sweating • Homeostasis Video
Adaptation • Must be able to change and adapt over time to environmental conditions and other biotic factors • Example: Fish have gills that make them suited to life underwater • Adaptation
Reproduction • Must be able to produce other organisms like themselves! • Asexual: reproduce on their own • Sexual: reproduce with a partner • Example: Fish lay eggs that hatch and produce new fish.
Energy Use • Must be able to obtain energy from a source and use that energy to fuel growth, development, and reproduction. • Example: Plants use energy from the sun to perform photosynthesis to create sugars
Universal Genetic Code • Must contain genetic code that directs the transmission of inherited traits from generation to generation • Ex: organisms contain DNA
