Language • The Swedish language is very similar to the languages of Norway, Denmark, and Iceland. • A few Swedish words come from the English and French languages. • Modern Swedish started in 1526, with a translation of the Bible’s New Testament, and was modeled after the Swedish spoken in the Stockholm area.
Holidays • On December 13, Swedes begin the Christmas season with St. Lucia Day. On this day a girl plays the part of St. Lucia, or the light queen. • Girls wear a white robe and a crown of candles on their head. • Boys wear a white robe, carry sticks with stars on them, and have tall paper cone on there heads.
Land • Sweden is the largest country in Europe. • Norrland is the largest of Sweden’s three main regions. • Spruce and pine forests cover areas of Sweden in the far North that are part of Lapland.
COOL FACTS • There are about 100,000 Roman Catholics in Sweden. • The two most popular sports in Sweden are football and hockey. • ABBA is the best known Swedish band.
