  3. Antidepressants: Are used to relieve the symptoms of depression, anxiety, dysthymia, social anxiety disorder, and other related conditions. The medication aims to correct the chemical imbalance of neurotransmitters in the brain that are believed to affect mood and behavior. Examples: amitriptyline, , fluoxetine, paraoxetine, citalopram.

They help regulate the functioning of brain circuits that control mood, thinking and perception. Examples: Clozapine, olanzapine, quetiapine, paliperidone, haloperidol, and thioridazine.

  5. Barbiturates: Barbiturates are used to reduce the activity of nerves and treating the symptoms of insomnia, seizures, and headache. These central nervous system depressants are commonly used for anesthesia and to treat anxiety on a short-term basis. Examples: phenobarbital, amobarbital, belladonna, pentobarbital, Mysolin, Seconal

  6. Narcotics: Also known as opioid pain relievers, narcotics are used to get relief from severe pain. Narcotic analgesics work by binding the receptors in the brain that block the feeling of pain. Abuse of narcotics can lead to addiction and other life-threatening conditions. Examples: tramadol, hydrocodone, codeine, fentanyl, hydromorphone and morphine

There are three classes of opiates: 1} morphine 2} opioids (oxycodone, hydrocodone) and 3) synthetic compounds (examples: alfentanil, levorphanol, fentanyl).

  8. Sedatives: Sedatives are used to ease agitation and permitting sleep. The drug slows down your brain’s activity and makes a person feel more relaxed. Most sedatives have addictive potential, that’s why they should be used when necessary only and under supervision. Examples: zolpidem, eszopiclone, zaleplon, diazepam, alprazolam, and phenobarbital.

  9. Tranquilizers: Tranquilizers are used to reduce anxiety, agitation, fear, tension and other related states of mental disturbances.
