What is Sustainability? • “sustainability’’ and ‘‘sustainable’’ mean to create and maintain conditions, under which humans and nature can exist in productive harmony, that permit fulfilling the social, economic, and other requirements of present and future generations” • E.O. 13514 definition
What is Driving Green Purchasing? As the largest consumer of energy in the U.S. economy, the Federal Government can and should lead by example when it comes to creating innovative ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, increase energy efficiency, conserve water, reduce waste, and use environmentally responsible products and technologies. - President Obama
Sustainable Acquisition • Federal agencies are required by statutes and executive orders to purchase certain products with specific environmental or energy attributes. • “Green purchasing” or “sustainable acquisition” refers to purchasing products with these attributes and purchasing services under which these products will be supplied or used.

Executive Order 135143 Goals for Improvement • greenhouse gas emissions • energy efficiency • water use efficiency and management • pollution prevention and waste elimination • regional and local integrated planning • sustainable Federal buildings • sustainable acquisition • electronics stewardship • environmental management
Executive Order 13514 • Requires agencies to ensure that 95% of all new contracts, including contract modifications, for products and services specify: • Energy-efficient products • Water-efficient products • Biobased products • Environmentally preferable products and services • Non-ozone depleting substances • Recycled content products • Non-toxic or less-toxic alternatives
Executive Order 13423 • E.O. 13423, Strengthening Federal Environmental, Energy, and Transportation Management, sets acquisition-related goals for: • Purchasing green products • Sustainable Federal buildings • EPEAT-registered products • Non- or low-toxic or hazardous products
2009: Real property portfolio of 912,780 assets, including 429,000 buildings 2010: Spent $535 billion on goods and services 2010 : Released 132.2 MTCE (Metric Tons Carbon Equivalent) The Damages We spend $3.5 billion annually to provide energy to our facilities.
Waste • In the U.S., buildings account for a high proportion of resource use and waste generation: 14% of potable water consumption 30% of waste output 38% of carbon dioxide emissions 40% of raw materials use 24 – 50% of energy use 72% of electricity consumption

Sustainable Products and Services • A tremendous resource to help the Federal government reduce its energy/water consumption during the design, construction, and operations of buildings since the Federal government has a giant footprint through its size and number of buildings nationwide.

Sustainable Best Practices • Become an establish leader • Innovate eco friendly business development • Identify Green goals for your employees • Adopt telework efforts to decrease overhead, commuting cost and the environmental impact • Measure company and individual green house gas emissions and monitor annually for decreases • Advertise your sustainable achievements • Participate in green initiatives with government agencies
