PH Test A ph test is a scale that measures the acidity and alkalinity of things goes from 0 – 14, 7 being basic or neutral. Good measure for streams is between 6.5 and 9. We did this test by holding a little piece of paper under the water for one minute and comparing it to the colour chart which identifies the ph level. The Wentworth rivers ph level is 5.5. which means the Wentworth river is more acidity than it should be.
Clarity Test A clarity test is a test that sees how clear or clean the water is. We do a clarity test by using a big clear tube and filling it with water from the stream. Next we guide two magnets down to the bottom of the tube (one on each side of the tube).we then look through one end of the tube and try to see the inside magnet. Our test results were very good because it was 100%. We disturbed the water by jumping in it and filled the tube with the sandy water we tried to look through it and we couldn’t see it until it was about 7-8cm away from our heads.
Habitat/environment. Habitat is a place where animals think its safe and a good home. We assessed the Wentworth river by rating it with a scale 1-4 one being poor and four is excellent . Protection of the banks –the Wentworth banks are covered with lots of vegetation, grasses and bushes. We rated the protection of the banks 4/4. How stable are the banks of the stream? The Wentworth stream bank is unstable and examples of erosion are easily seen. We rated the banks2/4. Plants present on the stream banks-plants normally grow 20 meters back from the stream. We rated the plants that were present on the stream banks 4/4. This means that our Wentworth valley environment/habitat is well looked after for the animals to live in. if the habitat is poor all the animals will die.
Velocity Velocity is measuring how fast the water flows. We ran this test by marking out ten meters with cones and timing how fast the float went down the stream. We ran the test three times and worked out the average time it took for the float to float ten meters. Our average time ended up being 23 seconds which means that our river flow is normal.
This is Hayley, Kayla, Matthew, Amber and James testing how fast the water flows/velocity.
ALL ABOUT BUGS! There are all types of bugs that live in the Wentworth river we had to look for them with a big net we had to look under rocks and under the sand these are the names of the bugs we found . • Mayflies • Dragonfly's • Beetles • Worms
Area Area is how much room there is in an amount of space. First we measured the width of the river which was 7.9m. We then measured the depth of the river in ten different places using cm. next we added all the measurements together which came to a total of 583cm. Then we divided the total by 10 because that is how many measurements we took. After, we multiplied the average depth by the width of the river to find the area of the river.
These are some awesome photos that we took at Wentworth valley
