Copper Pollution Copper is a metal found in natural deposits; commonly used in plumbing and brake pads; easily dissolves in water.
Causes • Causes- Copper is commonly corroded away from household plumbing. • It is also carried downstream from copper mining, wears away from copper brake pads, and dissolves out of boat paint. • The copper in brake pads is now the largest way copper is leaked into runoff in urban areas.
Indicators • Indicators-In severe cases they is a yellow-orange color to the water. • The water must be tested because it adds no taste, smell, or texture to the water.
Short Term Effects • In humans the effects are mild and can cause gastrointestinal stress; nausea, bloating and mild headaches. • On the environment, fish can lose their sense of smell and changes color of water, in extreme cases.
Long Term Effects • In Humans too much exposure to copper can damage the kidney and liver. Those with Wilson’s Disease are more sensitive. • In the environment, since fish have a lost sense of smell, they can no longer navigate and reach spawning grounds. • It is also very difficult to effectively remove it from the water.
