Getting started with the GA’s Professional Passport GA Conference 2019 Dr. Rebecca Kitchen CPD, Curriculum and Marketing Manager Geographical Association
Department for Education • Teacher CPD Standards (2016) • Teachers should: • keep their knowledge and skills as teachers up-to-date and be self-critical; • take responsibility for improving teaching through appropriate professional development, responding to advice and feedback from colleagues; • demonstrate knowledge and understanding of how pupils learn and how this has an impact on teaching; • have a secure knowledge of the relevant subject(s) and curriculum areas; • reflect systematically on the effectiveness of lessons and approaches to teaching; • know and understand how to assess the relevant subject and curriculum areas.
What is the GA Professional Passport? The GA Professional Passport and Award support and recognise teachers who reflect deeply and critically on the professional development that they undertake. Together they enable a focus on learning, process and impact rather than simply ‘doing CPD’.
What are the benefits of engaging with the GA Professional Passport? • it allows you to reflect deeply and critically and learn from the CPD which you undertake, therefore developing subject specific knowledge and/or pedagogy • it provides you with an online space to store and curate a portfolio of evidence about the professional development that you undertake • it is a vehicle for moving professional development from being a one-off event to being a wraparound experience and recognises investment in subject specific professional development • it provides evidence that you are meeting professional standards which can be used directly as part of the appraisal process or for job interviews • it helps make explicit the impact that you have on your students • provides opportunities for you to network online with other reflective professionals. • it flags up opportunities for free and low cost CPD at a time of declining CPD budgets.
What is the GA Professional Award? The GA Professional Award recognises the teacher as a developing professional through a structured and established award framework which is available to all GA members regardless of experience and setting.
What are the benefits of engaging with the GA Professional Award? • The GA Professional Award: • is a prestigious award, accredited by the GA and valued by head teachers and senior leaders • demonstrates that you are a reflective professional. Being externally accredited is increasingly important for career development • allows you to access models of good practice and to assess yourself against clear award criteria • provides opportunities for you to network online with other reflective professionals.
What do we mean by CPD? “The formal and informal learning opportunities with which geography teachers engage over time, causing them to reflect critically upon and consequently enhance their practice, ultimately for the benefit of their students’ development (Avalos, 2011).” Hill, J. and Jones, M. (2017) Chapter 20: Professional Development in The Handbook of Secondary Geography
How do I submit for an award? • You can submit and pay for an award at any time but there are three moderation windows per year. For 2019/2020 these windows are: • Monday 21 October – Monday 4 November 2019 • Monday 10 February – Monday 2 March 2020 • Monday 18 May – Monday 1 June 2020 • Your submission will be moderated in the next available window and you can expect to hear the outcome approximately two weeks after the window closes. • For each level of the award you will find a workbook within your GA Professional Passport. You should choose the evidence within your Passport which demonstrates that you have met the criteria. Please be aware that this evidence will be shared with the moderators for assessment.
