  4. Adult Placement in the UK What is Adult Placement in the UK? • Short or long term care • For a maximum of three adults • Placed through and supported by an Adult Placement Scheme • By an Adult Placement Carer approved by the Scheme

Adult Placement in the UK Adult Placement is very flexible and may include: • Accommodation with care/support in the family home of a Carer; • Day care based in or outside the home of the Carer • Respite care, with or without personal care, inside or outside the AP Carer’s home; and • Support in the community by an AP Carer acting as an extended family member

  6. Adult Placement in the UK How big is Adult placement in the UK? • There are 5500+ carers in the UK • Providing placements for more than 6,500 service users • Delivered through 170+ Schemes throughout the UK • 90% of Schemes are local authority run

I choose my owncarer and I like where they live. My boyfriend can stay I work in the local shop and get paid! I have my own key. I have lots of new friends. I can have a bath when I want. I picked the colour of my bedroom. I can help make the tea.

Adult Placement in the UK • Finding the right carers • Matching the person and the carers • Having a good placement agreement • Supporting and reviewing the placement • Good communication between the scheme and the carer and person placed • Regulation by the Commission for Social Care Inspection against Regulations and National Minimum Standards (not from the EU)

Adult Placement in the UK • How can Adult Placement be used for People with Alzheimer’s? • Day time support • Short breaks • Long term accommodation It is a particular advantage if the day time support or short breaks can take place in the person’ s own home so they can be in their own familiar surroundings, but only if this gives the main carer a good break

Adult Placement in the UK • Adult Placement is especially beneficial for people with Alzheimer’s because: • It is in an ordinary domestic setting • It is in small familiar surroundings • It provides consistency of carers • Care is individualised • There are more opportunities to sustain personal interests • The relationships can be interdependent- using the retained skills of the person
