Introduction • Microsoft network management platform • Designed for business users in medium to large environments • Incorporates substantial reporting and presentation capabilities
System overview • MOM is built upon • Data collection of events in Windows Event Logs • System information through WMI • Data in centralized database • Knowledge base • Ability to set up actionable tasks through use of management packs
Architecture(3) • Implements hierarchical access to data in through different consoles. • Allows for managed and unmanaged configurations. • Integrated reporting is powerful but requires MOM Reporting Server, the MOM Reporting Database, and the Reporting Console, built upon SQL server reporting services.
Implementation • Demanding platform • Hardware requirements – dedicated server • Software – Windows server + MS SQL • Designed for Windows • Does have limited support for other OS’s and third party products. • Part of Microsoft DSI (Dynamic Systems Initiative) - requires additional MS products
Conclusion • Makes monitoring of the large scale Windows server deployments easier. • Has high initial cost in hardware, software and human resources to set up and deploy • Limited functionality for non-Microsoft products.
