Targets... Today we will be: • Developing our knowledge and understanding of solids, liquids and gases • I can describe the differences between solid, liquids and gases • Developing our knowledge and understanding of particle arrangements • I can describe how particles are arranged in solids, liquids and gases • I can explain the effect of heat on solids
Solids, Liquids and Gases Solids • _____________ have a fixed shape. • ___________ and ___________ can change their shape. • _____________ and __________ have a fixed volume. • ___________ can change their volume – they spread out to fill the container. • _____________ cannot flow. • ___________ and ____________ can flow. • Substances that can flow are called _____________. Liquids Gases Solids Liquids Gases Solids Liquids Gases Fluids
Particle Arrangments How are the particles arranged: In a solid? In a liquid? In a gas?
Heating Solids What happens to the particles in a solid when they are heated? Safety?
Heating Solids • Collect equipment in pairs: • Bunsen, heat proof mat, goggles, matching bar and gauge, ball and hoop, timer • Once EVERYONE is set-up the lighter will be passed around • Remain at your station for the rest of the practical • Check the bar fits in the gauge then heat it for 4 minutes in the BLUE Bunsen flame. • Recheck the size of the bar. Record your results on the laminate. • Rest the HOT metal on the heat proof mat. DO NOT touch it.
Heating Solids What happens to the particles in a solid when they are heated?
The particles stay the same size... ... they just vibrate more and need more space
Do all metals expand the same? Bimetallic Strip: • Heat the bimetallic strip in the BLUE bunsen flame. • What do you observe? Record results on the laminate.
Heating Solids The particles stay the same size... ... they just vibrate more and need more space
Start …expand When metals are heated they… Liquids and gases can flow so they are called… Class Challenge
