Desired failure mode • Undesired failure mode
Assumption • No contact resistance between press and magnesium plate • Lumped Capacitance • Room temperature = 298 K • Open convection on all exposed surfaces
The Solution Tmax = 150 C or roughly 425 K Tf = 362 K Ra = 4.35x10^5 Nu top = 13.86 Nu bottom = 6.93 h = 14.83 W/mK Heat loss thru Natural Convection = 39.9 W Heat loss thru Conduction = 63.3 W
Conclusion • Total Heat loss = 103.2 W • 103.2 W must be applied at the press to increase Ts at that point
