  1. Grade 3 Geometry Lesson Plan- comparing 2D shapes and 3D figures Investigating angles

  2. Investigating Angles in Regular PolygonsLesson Plan ~ Menu • Minds On • Action! • Consolidation and Connection- Curriculum Integration Mind Map • Next Steps

  3. Investigating Angles in Regular Polygons ~ Minds On • Investigate the following questions through video: What are angles? Where do we see angles? What are the names of the different kinds of angles? (15 minutes)

  4. Investigating Angles in Regular Polygons ~ Minds On With a partner, think of as many different polygons as you can. (10 Minutes) When the class is ready, use this space to identify the polygons.

  5. Investigating Angles in Regular Polygons ~ Minds On Play the TVOKids game, Stacking Up! This game helps practice polygon identification (15 minutes)

  6. Investigating Angles in Regular Polygons ~ Action! • With a partner, take the polygons from the previous page and identify the properties of 2 polygons, including the angle properties. Compare the 2 polygons using a Venn diagram. (Partner activity 20 minutes)

  7. Investigating Angles in Regular Polygons ~ Action! • Play the Guess the Polygon Game! (small group activity- 20 minutes) • Every student gets an index card • On each index card, the student has to identify specific properties of that shape, without saying the shape’s name • Students take turns and try to guess each others’ shapes based on clues- they track how many clues it took for them to guess the shape correctly • Have a conversation after and talk about big ideas, such as: • A square is a special kind of rectangle, but a rectangle is not a square • Many polygons are also parallelograms

  8. Investigating Angles in Snowboarding~ Action! • Play the TVOKids game, Snowboard Run! This game shows how angles can be represented by degree of rotation.

  9. Investigating Angles in Regular Polygons ~ Consolidate and Connect • Use the Curriculum Integration Mind Map on the next page to connect the learning to other areas of the curriculum.

  10. Investigating Angles in Regular PolygonsConsolidate and Connect ~ Curriculum Integration Mind Map The Arts: Music- with a partner come up with a song that compares 2 polygons with respect to their properties Phys Ed: Make angles with your body by yourself and with a partner Angles in Polygons Math Extension: Data: Use the data from the photo lesson to construct a graph showing the prevalence of different angles in real life Technology: use powerpoint to make a venn diagram of different polygons and compare their angles Media Arts: using a digital camera, go for a walk in your neighbourhood and take photographs of angles in real life examples Science: Build a blueprint for a structure with specific parameters based on polygons and angles

  11. Investigating Angles in Regular Polygons ~ Next Steps Look at angles that are found in 3D figures
