  2. Political Causes • A divided empire (E&W) becomes weak • Gov’t becomes too strict • Many corrupt officials • People stop supporting the gov’t

  3. Economic Causes • Romans use too much slave labor • Heavy taxes • Required to support gov’t • Farmers leave their land • Middle class disappears

  4. Military Causes • Visigoths & Germanic tribes invade the empire • Roman army starts to lack training and discipline • Romans forced to hire foreign soldiers to defend extensive borders

  5. Social Causes • The people become more and more selfish and lazy • Population declines • War • disease

  6. Exit Ticket • Pick the cause that you think contributed the most to the fall of the Roman Empire and illustrate this cause on a ½ sheet of paper.
