  1. Top trumps – • Play top trumps with the different types of radiation.

  2. 09 April 2012 Radioactivity Objectives Be able to describe the 3 types of radioactivity, recall their penetration power and be able to write decay equations. Keywords: background radiation, proton, neutron, electron, nucleus, alpha, beta, gamma, radioisotope, ionisation, isotope

  3. OUTCOMES • ALL MUST be able to state the 3 types of radioactivity and describe what is meant by the term “Background Radiation”. • MOST SHOULD be able to describe what an Isotope is and describe how different radioactivity can penetrate different materials. • SOME COULD explain why different radioactivity can penetrate different materials and be able to describe radioactive decay using equations.

  4. Nuclear materials • Unstable isotopes break down. (Radioisotopes) • So radiation is given out. • The 3 types are: Alpha, Beta and Gamma.

  5. Ionisation When atoms _________ electronsthey become____________. When atoms gain ___________they become negative. When an atom has an unbalanced number of ________ and electronsit becomes ___________ and is called an __________. ion charged electrons protons positive lose

  6. Penetrating Power Alpha particles are easy to stop, gamma rays are hard to stop.Particles that ionise other atoms strongly have a low penetrating power, because they lose energy each time they ionise an atom. (turn an atom into an ion)

  7. Penetrating Power Alpha particles are …….. to stop, ………. rays are hard to stop.Particles that ionise other atoms strongly have a low ……………… power, because they lose energy each time they ionise an atom. What does “ionise” mean?
