  1. Animal Research Administration Update Tissue Sharing Requirements Reminder/Update Kathy Wadsworth Director Office of Animal Research Oversight (OARO)

  2. Tissue Sharing: Purpose • A means of increasing the benefits derived from experimental animals while minimizing the number of animals used. • The ARC encourages PIs to share animals/animal tissues whenever possible.

  3. ARC Policy on Tissue Sharing Requirements • A Tissue Sharing Form may be used in lieu of formal ARC approval, when tissue is obtained from another source that does not involve an increase in animal numbers or changes to existing approved procedures.

  4. Tissue Sharing: Typical Scenario • Investigator “A” harvests tissues following completion of a study using a mouse model. • Investigator “B” requests livers from mice used in investigator “A’s” study for in-vitro research. 

  5. A Tissue Sharing Form is not necessary when … • Transfer between UCLA investigators, if: • a) both investigators have approved ARC protocols, • b) the tissue being obtained originates from the same genus as that listed in the recipient investigator’s protocol, and • c) the tissue originates from non-USDA covered species. • Transfer from a UCLA investigator to an outside institution, if the tissue originates from non-USDA covered species. • Please note that although completion of a Tissue Sharing Form is not required in these cases, investigators are still expected to meet requirements #1-3 of the form.

  6. Tissue Sharing Form: Exceptions • If modifications to the ARC protocol are required to accommodate the use or transfer of tissues, ARC review and approval of an amendment application is required prior to implementation of such changes.  

  7. Tissue Sharing Form: Exceptions • If your funding agency requires formal IACUC approval for the use of animal tissues, the ARC requests that a tissue sharing protocol be submitted using the online Research Application Tracking System (RATS). http://rats.research.ucla.edu
