DEFINITIONS BY ORGANIZATIONS • “Children on the streets are those whose families support base has become increasingly weakened, (who) must share in the responsibility for family survival by working on the city streets and market places. • Children of the street are a much smaller number of children who daily struggles for survival without family support, alone. While often called ‘abandoned’, they too might also have abandoned their families, tired of insecurity and rejection and aged up with violence…..(their) ties with home now have been broken…..de facto(they) are without families.” - UNICEF

A minute about Us • The Don Bosco Navajeevan Society, started in June 1998 in twin cities of Hyderabad & Secunderabad for the welfare of street children and youth at risk. • The Government of Andhra Pradesh, in May 2000 recognized Don Bosco Navajeevan as “Fit Institution” under Juvenile Act. DBNJ is now authorized to care for neglected juveniles. • We have two shelters (Secunderabad & Nampally), a Home for School going children and a rehabilitation centre with facilities like care homes and a vocational training centre at Ramanthapur. • In Don Bosco Navajeevan, so far 18,000 street children have benefited from personal contact, out of whom 6,400 have been persuaded to return home. More than 400 street children stay at Navajeevan centres where 200 of them are provided an opportunity to go to school and the rest are undergoing Vocation Training in our Technical School. • Everyday they are provided three meals, medical care, cultural activities, counseling, career guidance, recreation and other needs.

OBJECTIVES • Acceptance of the child unconditionally for what he/she is. • Collaboration with the child in his/her own initiatives to overcome deprivations. • Educate the child to stand for his rights. • Train the children in skill trades to earn hood his lively. • Counselling the child to make positive and correct choice. • Motivating the child to go back home if there is a “Home” for him to go to. • Making every effort to rehabilitate the child. • Promoting networking with people of all walks of life and creating social • supports that contributes towards the dignity of the child.

RE-ORIENTATION PROGRAMME • 1.To instill in the children a sense of discipline by following a regular time-table. • 2.To slowly wean away the child from the street by having interesting classes, conducting games and seeing to their material needs. • 3. To provide an atmosphere of affection and • support for the child, so that he does not need the freedom of the street anymore as compensation. • 4. To guide the child towards rehabilitation in any form, education, vocational training etc. and thereby rebuild his life. • 5. To teach the child at least the basics of • education. • 6. Providing opportunities for improvement and learning of the outside world, through picnics, outings etc.

  25. OTHER INITIATIVES BY DBNJ APSA SHIP TRAINING PROGRAMME  1. APSA – ASSOCIATION FOR PROMOTING SOCIAL ACTION 2. It is for building Happy, Healthy and Responsible Sexual Realities for street and slum children. EXPOSURE PROGRAMMES E 1. Create awareness about neglected/ abandoned children 2. Exposing the students to the new way of understanding the street children at risk in slums. 3. Motivate the students bringing into awareness about street child sufferings. CHILD RIGHTS & JUSTICE FORUM DBNJ has taken initiative to form a forum with different NGOs who are Working for the welfare of Street Children & Young at Risk. At present, the Forum has 15 different NGOs working as Network.

  26. HOME LINK  1. www.homlink.in is website specifically dedicated to ensure the restoration of the children back Home. 2. Assist in tracing the Lost (or) Missing Children. 3. The missing child search network is open to all Don Bosco organizations in India that serve the unaccompanied youngster and is part of the Home Link Network. PEER LEADERS •  1. A group of children go to the contact points for street education. • They interact with children on street & counsel them as a friend. • Give them the hope & future

PSYCHO-SOCIAL SERVICES • To provide professional psychological support to the child. • To conduct the Group therapy and group processes, including role Plays, play back theatre, etc. • To train the children in interpersonal relationships, dealing with peer pressure and other life skills. • To closely follow up children who have problems with addiction. • Training programmes for Don Bosco and other NGOs staff in dealing with the children. • To conduct a seminars, workshops to like minded organizations on child psychology and interpersonal skills.
