CONTENT Data Rescue: Purpose WMO DARE approach DARE Partenrship WMO and GFCS Governance International Workshop, Maputo 2014 INDARE : A framework for collaboration
Data Rescue Programme purpose • Modern Archiving Systems • Adequate Storage Facilities • Protection of storing Facilities (Backup) • Data Management Systems • Training (DARE, CDMS, Data Analysis)
Vision: Transforming old archives into a source for a high value of climate information Progressing science • Climate variability and climate change assessment, • Modeling, • Calibration of Satellite data Sector Applications and Risk Management • Agriculture, Water Resources, Energy, Insurance • Disaster Risk Reduction • Climate Early Warning Data Rescue (DARE) is an integral part of the World Climate Services Program with a long term goal of rescuing and digitizing climate records. A focus is made on those records at risk of loss. DARE enables climate science and climate services by making readily available long and high quality climate datasets needed for:
3-tiered approach Global coordination: Provision of best practices/guidelines on DARE and monitoring its activities worldwide. • WMO DARE activity guided by the WMO Commission for Climatology Regional Integrating initiatives: Focus on regional needs for addressing common climate issues and data and information sharing • European Climate Assessment and Data Sets (ECA&D) Data shared by 62 countries • Mediterranean Data Rescue Initiative (MEDARE), 22 Member countries contributing • West African Assessment and Data Rescue Initiative (WACA-DARE), 17 countries • Indian Ocean Data Rescue initiative ( in a planning phase) National Data Rescue projects: National Meteorological institutions get benefit from global/regional initiatives to undertake operational DARE activities • National Meteorological and Hydrological Services (NMHS) leading • Increased support by the WMO technical programs and the Resource Mobilization Office • Increased bilateral collaboration with a WMO facilitating role • Increased national government awareness of the critical aspect of climate data helped prioritizing DARE in recent years
DARE Partnership • DARE is a continous WMO programme, worldwide efforts are needed in supporting it financially
