GUIDE REMINDER Home Reading Ⅱ Shakadang Trail, Swallow Grotto and Eternal Spring Shrine Millions of years ago, the island of Taiwan was lifted by the collision of plates. In time, the marble rocks were exposed to constant wind blowing through the gorge, and were cut by a strong current of water, finally producing this natural wonder of Taroko Gorge. 1
GUIDE REMINDER Home Shakadang is an aboriginal name, referring to the discovery of animal teeth in ancient times by Atayal tribal people. The trail is about 4,500 meters, which allows you to be close to the clean, bright green- blue water and the marble riverbed. As the river cut deeper into the gorge, the holes which gradually formed by the erosion of the swift current of the Liwu River became visible above the water line, and so tourists today can view these interesting “rocks with the holes”, called Swallow Grotto. 2 3
GUIDE REMINDER Home The Eternal Spring Shrine (Changchun Shrine), where people can commemorate the 212 workers who were killed while building the gorge road (officially called the Central Cross-Island Highway). 4
