  3. Political & Economic Problems • Reparations announced • Uprisings, strikes, murders across Germany • French invade Ruhr, 1923 • German economy collapses • Beer Hall Putsch

  4. The Golden Years 1924-9 • Success under Stresemann • American loans – Dawes & Young Plans • Period of expansion – new factories etc

  5. Wall Street Crash ! • Wall Street collapse triggered the Great Depression • German economy affected immediately • Coalition governments unable to cope • Unemployment soared

  6. Election results • Nazis and Communists did well • July 1932 saw Nazis the largest party in the Reichstag • Parties like the Social Democrats relying on middle class support suffered

  7. Hitler helped into power • Fears of communist success led to support for Nazis from big business • Army warned Hindenburg of possible civil war • November 1932 saw fall in Nazi support!

  8. Hitler becomes Chancellor • Negotiations behind the scenes saw Hitler appointed Chancellor in January 1933 • von Papen and Army leaders were confident that they controlled Hitler

  9. The Consolidation of Power • New elections ordered for March 1933 • Reichstag Fire led to attack on Communists • Alliance with Nationalists gave Hitler majority • Enabling Act passed
