  2. Today’s Essential Question: At the end of this lesson, you should be able to answer this question: How do the documents of our founding fathers show evidence of the influence of Enlightenment philosophes?

  3. Who were the Enlightenment Thinkers? Voltaire Montesquieu Locke Rousseau

  4. Match the philosopher with what he was most known for…. Voltaire Government should be kept under control though separation of powers Montesquieu A social contract exists between citizens and their government Locke Opposed the absolute power of the king and supported freedom of speech, religion, and press Rousseau People have natural rights to life, liberty, and the ownership of property

  6. VOLTAIRE: “Nothing can be clearer than that men, enjoying the faculties of their common nature, are in a state of equality; they are equal when they perform their animal functions, and exercise their understandings. The king of China, the great mogul, or the Turkish pasha cannot say to the lowest of his species, “I forbid you to digest your food… or to think.” All animals of every species are on an equality with one another, and animals have by nature beyond ourselves the advantages of independence. If a bull, while paying his attentions to a heifer, is driven away by the horns of another bull stronger than himself, he goes to seek a new mistress in another meadow, and lives in freedom.” http://ebooks.adelaide.edu.au/v/voltaire/dictionary/chapter184.html “I say, there is scarce any city or borough in Europe, where blood has not been spilled for religious quarrels; I say, that the human species has been perceptibly diminished, because women and girls were massacred as well as men. I say that Europe would have a third larger population if there had been no theological disputes. In fine, I say, that so far from forgetting these abominable times, we should frequently take a view of them, to inspire an eternal horror for them. . . . It is for our age to make amends by toleration, for this long collection of crimes, which has taken place through the lack of toleration during sixteen barbarous centuries.” http://castrovalleyhigh.org/ourpages/auto/2010/9/10/40571378/World184-189.pdf

  7. Group Roles There will be four roles assigned to each team: Reader. The Reader is responsible for reading the assigned passage(s) Recorder.
