  1. Recovering the American Lobster Population of the Long Island Sound • Monika Brzostowska, Anastasia Deda, ElissaOlivera, Jiemin Yang Introducation Implementations • Educating people • Via Social Media • Build a social media marketing team. • Build a Facebook page where we update about lobster study in Long Island Sound. • Use our networks and our friends’ network in Facebook to pass the messages. • Update our status every day. • Similarly, we would use Twitter to expand our awareness-raising campaign every day. • Educate young generation • Commission children book writer to create a lobster character and write a series of story and incorporate the information about the situation of lobster in Long Island Sound into the story. If children do not like to eat lobster, the parents will not buy them. • Distribute the books in libraries and public schools • Cooperate with the Department of Education and Department of Environmental Protection to design NYC environmental curriculum and bring it to the classrooms. Make this a required curriculum. • Commission anime producer to create animation comedy about aquatic livings’ lives under climate change, featuring the lobster character. • Educating lobsterman • In order to restore the population of lobsters in Long Island Sound, we need to reduce the fishing of lobsters. • Set up a local workshop to inform the lobstermen about the serious situation of lobster population in LIS • Build a consulting team to give lobsterman advices on how to transform their business • Design training program which provides them with free training in new skills in different field. • Aeration: In order to increase the dissolved oxygen in the water which will therefore increase the amount of oxygen supply to the lobsters, raising their population, we will construct ten artificial waterfalls underneath the Throgs Neck Bridge (as well as in Oyster Bay, Great Neck and Long Beach) similar in design to the one on the Brooklyn Bridge in order to create faster moving water and increase turbulence (falling water traps air, therefore trapping oxygen and adding it to the LIS) while simultaneously cooling the water. In addition, these waterfalls will cool the Long Island Sound by collecting the water from the Sound and storing it in solar powered cooling tanks until the water is cool enough to return to the LIS. We will construct ten of these waterfalls throughout the Sound, primarily concentrated in the Western Section, and let them run for ten years and see if the effects are beneficial enough to continue to construct more or to see if they are effective enough in that quantity. • Get an estimate of how much it will cost to build this waterfall - 1 month • Find sponsors, Create a website that has a donation section, Find investors to invest in our cause, apply for grants – 5 years • Hire engineers - 6 months • Figure which is the safest, most cost efficient way to construct the waterfall - 5 months • Find a way to power the waterfall (green/renewable energy resources) - 3-4 months • Design filter pools to filter the water that will be used for the water - 3 months • Research: the waterfall will not cause any harm to the environment, wont change LIS ecosystem - 1 year • Get a permit from NY state government to build the bridge - 5 months • Hire contractors - 2 months • Hire workers - 2 months • Hire environmental consultants to make sure waterfall is eco friendly – 2 months • Give money to workers to get materials (pipes, scaffolding, pumps) - 2 months • Close off the area for construction and get base of waterfall in – 5 months • Construct waterfall – 1 year • Have the opening ceremony for the waterfall (get the public more aware and involved during this ceremony) – 1 Day • How big should the waterfall be? 135 feet tall, 90 feet wide • What times should it run? From 7am-9pm Introduction goes here Objectives Conclusion 1. Increase the lobster population by 17% by the year 2025 2. Increase the lobster population by 34% percent by the year 2032 3. Increase lobster population by 51% more by the year 2042 4. Increase lobster population by 68% more by the year 2052 5. Have the lobster population up by 85% by the year 2062 from the time we started in 2012. CONCLUSIONCONCLUSION CONCLUSION CONCLUSION CONCLUSION CONCLUSION CONCLUSION CONCLUSION CONCLUSION CONCLUSION CONCLUSION CONCLUSION CONCLUSION CONCLUSION CONCLUSION CONCLUSION CONCLUSION Strategies • Aeration: Construct ten artificial waterfalls in the Western part of the LIS by 2022. (the area that has the lowest levels of dissolved oxygen) similar in design to that underneath the Brooklyn Bridge in order to create faster moving water and increase turbulence which will increase the dissolved oxygen in the water. We will also construct a cooling tank in order to cool the water as it returns back to the Sound in order to decrease the temperature of the water. Let these Waterfalls run for ten years and by 2032 assess their efficiency and determine whether to construct more throughout other eastern areas in the LIS. • Mixing: Construct 3 centers with large jets in areas where there aren’t a lot of people, and construct smaller jets underneath the docks present in the beach areas in order to increase the mixing of the LIS focused on the Western LIS by the year 2042. • Capping Greenhouse Gases: Prevent CO2 emissions in NYC from exceeding 400ppm by the year 2100. • Regulating Fishing Industry: Make a regulation that enforces the Southern New England lobster industry to reduce their annual lobster harvest by 42,000 pounds by the end of 2050 • Public Awareness: Educate people about the issue that is occurring in the Long Island Sound (lobster populations, hypoxia, dissolved oxygen, global climate change and how it is making conditions worse in the LIS) by making it a requirement for NYC students to take environmental classes as part of their curriculum and advertising the issue online, at local companies and in schools. • Regulating Fishing Industry • Make a regulation that enforces the Southern New England lobster industry to reduce their annual lobster harvest by 42,000 pounds by the end of 2015 (totaling a 100,000 pound reduction by 2050) • Increase the price of lobsters by $1 per pound by the end of 2050 as a disincentive for people to consume lobsters. • Require lobster industry to work on the problem of ghost traps (lost gear that continues to capture lobster and other species) • Reduce the amount of lobsters being harvested annually to 100,000 pounds and continuously decrease the amount over time depending on the recovery rate of the lobsters. • Capping Greenhouse Gases • Create a law that everyone in New York City needs to have an environmentally friendly car (hydro powered or electric) - if they are to own one – by the year 2022. Incentives for the public to buy these cars include tax breaks and money from trade ins that will go toward the price of the new car. • Make subway and bus prices cheaper to encourage people to use public transportation instead of cars. • Encourage carpooling – make it very accessible (advertise online and locally) • Make hot water heaters more efficient by wrapping them in insulation blankets. • Make updating insulation in homes and other buildings a requirement by 2015. • Grow gardens on NYC rooftops. • Jets • Have meeting to obtain government funding. • Inform the individuals in these locations about the changes that are coming. • Set up the first center with a large jet in New Rochelle and add ten smaller jets that are attached to docks in Hudson Beach (New Rochelle) by the year 2022. • Set up the second center with a large jet in Glen Cove and add ten smaller jets in PryibilBeach (Glen Cove) by the year 2032. • Set up the third and final center with a large jet in Wards Island and add the final ten smaller jets in Hell Gate (Wards Island) by the year 2042.
