Mechanical Aspects • Propeller design is based on that of a pinwheel • Rotational energy created by propeller drives a gear box in a fishing reel • The fishing reel redirects the direction of the torque • The gear box also increases the angular velocity • Magnets are hung from the reel and spin in the generator
Electrical Aspects • The magnets spin inside the generator producing a small current • A very long length of wire • High gauge • Strong magnets • Moderate angular velocity
Passing Wind: Encounters with Problems • Number of turns increases current, but also increases resistance • Connection issues • Spinning magnets and resonance • Hasty decisions lead to broken parts • Number of magnets is irrelevant if the wire has been cut
Conclusions • Poor planning can be overcome by teamwork • Bar magnets were the better choice for this project • Mistakes were made with the wire (gauge, length, placement) • Although wind is free and ubiquitous, it is a difficult resource to harvest • Sucking up to the teachers will get us nowhere • Cheryl rocks!
