Lesson 7 1 Kings 19:1 – 20:21
Elijah Flees • Ahab tells Jezebel what has happened • Elijah had killed all her Baal prophets • Jezebel threatens to kill Elijah • By the next day • Elijah flees to Beersheba
Self-pity • Elijah leaves his servant • He goes into the wilderness • He asks God to take his life • While Elijah is sleeping an angel awakes him to take food • This is repeated • Elijah goes to Mt Horeb • The mountain of God
God’s Lesson for Elijah • “What are you doing here, Elijah?” • I’ve worked hard; it has done no good • I’m the only one left; they want to kill me • A great and strong wind • God was not in the wind • An earthquake and fire • God was not in either of these
God’s Lesson for Elijah • A still small voice • “What are you doing here, Elijah?” • I’ve worked hard; it has done no good • I’m the only one left; they want to kill me • “GO” … there is work to be done • Anoint Hazael as king of Syria • Anoint Jehu as king of Israel • Anoint Elisha to take your place
God’s Lesson for Elijah • There are 7,000 who have not bowed to Baal • Faith and courage at Mt Carmel • Did not convince the people • They did not turn from Baal • God is patient with Elijah • God works in different ways • Through the voice of Elijah
Elisha Follows Elijah • Elisha is plowing with oxen • Elijah walks by and throws his mantle on Elisha • Elisha understood the meaning • Let me go say my good-byes • He left to go with Elijah
Syrians Attack Ahab • Jehoshaphat, a good king, is ruling in Judah • Ben-hadad is king of Syria • Damascus • He has 32 allied kings with him • Sends message to Ahab • I want your silver and gold and your wives and children
Syrians Attack Ahab • Ahab, seeing the combined force against him, agrees • Ben-hadad wants more • Ahab gets council • Sends reply—first request I agreed to; this one is too much • Ben-hadad promises to ‘annihilate’ Israel • Ahab says—don’t count the victory until the battle is over
God’s Lesson for Ahab • God promises to give Ahab victory over Syria • Not something Ahab is used to • “so that you may know that I am the Lord” • Not because of Ahab’s righteousness • Against great odds
Israel Is Victorious • Ahab follows the prophet’s instructions • 232 young officers out front • 7,000 soldiers behind them • Ben-hadad and kings are drunk • “take them alive” • Each Israelite kills the first Syrian he sees • Israel has a great victory
