Welcome to Back to School Night! Get to know Mrs. Kahan, a dedicated and experienced fourth grade teacher, as she shares her goals for the year and details about the curriculum, assessments, and behavior management in her classroom.

About Mrs. Kahan • Please call me Tiffany! • Penn State graduate • Master’s Degree plus 30 credits • Sixteenth Year in Fourth Grade • Stepmother to Jordan and Justin and mother to Mia. • Triathlete, Cross Fitter, annual back flipper and volleyball player (before the baby anyway…)
My Goals 2014-2015 • Create a respectful atmosphere • Instill resourcefulness • Challenge and encourage at all levels • Meet each student’s needs • Encourage curiosity and love of learning.

Social Studies • Social Studies Alive Program • We start off with a broad study of our country’s regions and then focus in on Pennsylvania’s history, economy, geography and government.
Science • Observation Skills • Magnets and Electricity Investigations • Water Investigations, Watersheds, Wetlands • Space • Experiments
Everyday Math Program • A math curriculum geared to demonstrate various methods to find a solution • Introduces content in small increments and frequently revisits those topics • Each lesson builds on the previous • Guided Math Groups depending on needs: 2-3 days a week.
Assessment Formative assessments: (ongoing) ~ Exit Slips (graded out of 4) ~ Math Journal and math log spot checks ~ Teacher Observations Summative Assessments: ~ Traditional teacher tests and quizzes ~ District Assessments
Homework • Daily 40 minutes ~ Practice and promotes responsibility ~Please check over their work ~Reading Calendar (please initial) • Consequences and Rewards ~IOU forms (miss 5 minutes of recess) ~Monthly Homework Club ~Contact parents for frequent offenders
Behavior Management • Positive reinforcement is the basis our management system. • Tickets are earned for positive behaviors by individuals and groups. • Tickets are taken away for behaviors that don’t follow our class expectations. • Ruff Day Forms (sent home after several verbal warnings)
Tickets!!!! • Students can earn • tickets daily based on: • Extra credit • Getting quiet quickly • Doing something nice for someone • Showing Respect • Table Points Tickets can also be earned if the teachers are in an extraordinarily good mood!!!! Students can “cash in” tickets at the end of every month for special treats and/or place them in Raffle Bag.
Odds and Ends • Please email office for any changes in pick-up. • Conferences: Sign-Up Genius • Scholastic Book Orders: Online Orders only please • SSR Book- Chapter book • Donations-We always welcome some gently used board games and puzzles for indoor recess. • Daily snack (healthy) Snack donations are also welcome for those students who forget theirs. (Small bags of pretzels and Goldfish are great!) • Birthday Treats (no nuts and no cutting or scooping involved please!)
Odd and Ends-Take Two • WIN– 12:45-1:15. Most supplemental reading groups and speech classes are scheduled during this time. • Instrument Day – E Day • Please sign all graded items on indicated line. (except spelling) • Accordion/ Expandable Folder- Please clean out ONE WAY section nightly.
