  2. http://www.nizkor.org/features/fallacies/ad-hominem.html • Marked by or being an attack on an opponent's character rather than by an answer to the contentions made.

  3. Universal Example • Bill: "I believe that abortion is morally wrong." Dave: "Of course you would say that, you're a priest." Bill: "What about the arguments I gave to support my position?" Dave: "Those don't count. Like I said, you're a priest, so you have to say that abortion is wrong. Further, you are just a lackey to the Pope, so I can't believe what you say."

  4. Explanation • Dave is attacking bill because he is a priest rather than the argument he uses to support the fact that abortion is wrong. Dave says that he has to believe that because he is a priest. http://www.nizkor.org/features/fallacies/ad-hominem.html

  5. Examples • Act 3 Page 220 • Abigail: Oh, Heavenly Father, take away this shadow! • Proctor: How do you call Heaven! Whore! Whore!

  6. Explanation • Proctor is asking Abigail how she could possibly be calling on Heaven because he considers a whore. He is attacking the fact that he believes she’s a whore rather than her calling upon Heaven.

  7. Examples • Act 3 Page 217 • Proctor: It is not a child. Now hear me, sir. In the sight of the congregation she were twice this year put out of this meetin’ house for laughter during prayer. • Danforth: What’s this? Laughter during-!

  8. Explanation • Proctor attacks Abigail because of her accusation of laughing during prayer and uses that to support his argument of her being a witch. Danforth immediately reacts to this and judges the fact that she was laughing during prayer rather than them actually accusing her of witchcraft.
