Crickets, Cricket Logo & Approaches to Materials Presented by Mary E. Hopper, Ph.D. Assistant Professor, Technology in Education Course Mentor, ECOMP 5018 Intro. to Ed. Robotics Lesley University
History This story that begins and ends with Lego • Hired as faculty mentor of Robotics. • Asked to create an online course. • Cost of Lego prohibitive.
Handy Cricket • Found the "Handy Cricket” promising, • Lineage the same with as Lego Mindstorms. • Developed at MIT Media Lab with NSF support. http://www.gleasonresearch.com/ http://handyboard.com/cricket/ http://www.cs.uml.edu/~fredm/
Getting Started • Open and review the contents of your kit now…
In Short, Not Coincidentally • Almost identical to Lego RCX brick without it’s outer case. • Not surprising--designed by the same folks.
Handy Cricket • Robotics controller programmed using Logo language ($59). • Uses 4 AA batteries; holder mounted on the Cricket itself. • 4K-byte EEPROM memory for user code. • Built-in Serial IR interface, uses 4 9v battery, communicates at 9600 baud with the host computer for program download ($29). • 2 outputs (motors & light) & 2 inputs (touch & light sensors). • Has a piezo beeper for sound output. • Has a run/stop button and “program running” status LED. • 2 bus ports, also can control 12 or more custom peripheral devices (e.g. sensors, LED/LCD displays, actuators like servo motors). • Pre-Wired/Soldered DC Motor, Tiny Light Bulb, Touch Sensor, Light Sensor, IR Sensor, Break Beam Sensor ($6.00 – $9.00). • DB9M-DB9F Serial Cable and Extra USB/Serial Adapter Cable
Yikes! BUT in short … VERY SIMILAR TO THE LEGO RCX BRiCK!
Cricket Software • Software and a printed manual not included, but can be freely downloaded from web: http://handyboard.com/cricket • CD-ROM for $5.00, includes software and reference manual and 10 minute movie of 1991 MIT6.270 Robot Design Competition.
Immediate Mode Practice • Test the Connection (Beep) • Run the Motor • Turn on the Light • Control with Touch Sensor (Switch)
Where’s the bricks? Unlike Lego, Cricket does NOT come with building materials besides basic electronics! Now What?
