THE RESEARCH • Main aims: • Achieving a deeper knowledge of migrants’ housing pathway in Milan • Observing how individual decisions and life styles are intersected with structural factors (housing policies and housing market) in shaping the pathway • Discovering how the notion of home in its cultural meaning is lived in the migratory experience. • Methodology • Life stories collection • Maps as elicitation instrument • Semi structured interviews to key informants

  3. THE RESEARCH (2) • Fieldwork • - A popular area of Milan Social and private housing

  4. The research (3) • Sample: • Gender balance • In Italy from more than 5 years • At least 1 residential moving • Living in this area

Preliminary results • Great difference in the housing pathway according to the gender • Cultural construction of the space influenced by environmental context, culture of origin, personal experience and culture of the receiving country (often spread by children) • Daily relation with the neighborhood : this can be expressed by services, facilities or people. • Noticeable diffusion of housing hardship for a quite long period: satisfactory housing condition achieving after 8-10 years. • Strong connection between legal status and housing condition

  6. Theoretical question • Why it would be important to achieve a deep knowledge of the everyday practices linked to housing and of the decision making processes characterizing households’ choices?
