  2. Vision behind SEED • Reduce the digital gap between developing countries and the rest the world • Create bridges between such communities • Sustain development through educational involvement in communities where we conduct business

Resources for SEED success • Longstanding presence in over 100 countries • Truly international work force • Exposure to business in the global arena coupled to local insights • Population of researchers, scientists, engineers, staff and their families and the SEED community Sharing our knowledge, time and vision to support this educational project.

SEED in action • To provide disadvantages school children and their teachers, in communities where we enjoy a business presence, with means to access Internet as a cost-effective mean to obtain information and educational materials. • To provide opportunities for IT literacy, IT exposure and education to the students and to the communities around them

SEED in action - Continued • To create scientific vocation and guide educational development at an early age through the use of a structured multilingual online Science Center • To facilitate collaborative projects between school children as a way to develop team-work and self-confidence skills

  6. SEED overall results • 108 schools from 31 countries representing a population of more than 105,000 students are enjoying connectivity to Internet. • The online Science Center has been translated from English to be available in: Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish • 12 projects involving 9 countries and 25 schools have been completed on various themes such as: “Testing Water Quality”, “Testing Air Quality” and “Food and Nutrition”

  7. SEED on the African Continent • 30 schools • 58,000 students in the following countries: • Algeria, Angola, Chad, Congo, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Nigeria and South Africa.

  8. Success case 1: Angola Njinga M’Bande School • Njinga M’bande, a public school hosting 9,000 pupils, has been selected for the SEED project in 2002. • Schlumberger donated 20 computers and the entire necessary hardware to set up a wireless 24-hour high-band connection • SEED Portuguese version came online and allowed the use of the computers and the online Science Center in the native language. • Recently, collaboration between Njinga M’bande and the International School in Luanda was initiated and allowed pupils from both institutions to work on common projects.

Success case 2: Equatorial Guinea Centro Juvenil don Bosco • Centro Juvenil don Bosco was selected in Malabo • Collaboration between Schlumberger and Chevron Texaco in implementing SEED • Chevron Texaco donated 12 computers to the school while Schlumberger provided other hardware and the connectivity • Students are benefiting from the Spanish version of the online Science Center.

  10. In progress projects Schools have been identified as potential beneficiaries of SEED and projects are in progress in countries like Chad, Congo, Gabon and Angola.
