African American History MonthEarly Days and Slavery: 1400s-1807* 1492 A black navigator, Pedro Alonso Nino, travels with Christopher Columbus’ first expedition to the New World. 1619 A Dutch ship brings 20 African indentured servants to Jamestown, Virginia. 1739 One of the earliest slave revolts takes place in Stono, South Carolina. A score of whites and more than twice as many black slaves are killed as they try to flee. 1746 Lucy Terry, a slave, composes “Bars Fight,” the first known poem by an African American. It is passed down orally and published in 1855. 1773 The first book by an African is published in England by Phillis Wheatley, then a slave, publishes “Poems on Various Subjects, Religious and Moral.” 1775 George Washington changes a previous policy and allows free blacks to enlist in the Continental Army. Approximately 5,000 do so. 1787 The U.S. Constitution is ratified. It provides for the continuation of the slave trade for another 20 years and required states to aid slaveholders in the recovery of slaves. 1793 Eli Whitney invents the cotton gin, which makes it possible to cultivate cotton on a huge scale in the South and greatly increasing the need for slaves. 1807 Congress bans the importation of slaves into the U.S. The law will be largely ignored in the South. * Condensed and paraphrased from the website http://www.pbs.org/wnet/aaworld/timeline/early_01.html
African American History MonthEarly Days and Slavery: 1827-1865* 1827 The first African American newspaper in the U.S., Freedom’s Journal, is published. 1831-1861 Approximately 75,000 slaves escape to the North and freedom using the Underground Railroad, assisted by abolitionists and sympathizers. 1839 Slaves aboard the Spanish ship Amistad take it over and sail it to Long Island. 1849 Harriet Tubman escapes from slavery. She returns to the South and becomes one of the main “conductors” on the Underground Railroad. 1857 The Supreme Court decides that African Americans are not citizens of the U.S. and that Congress has no power to restrict slavery in any federal territory. 1861 The Civil War begins when the Confederates attack Fort Sumter, in South Carolina. The war, fought over the issue of slavery, will rage for another four more years. 1863 President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation frees all slaves in the Confederacy. 1865 Congress passes the Thirteenth Amendment, outlawing slavery. This is the beginning of the Reconstruction era. Please plan on joining us for lunch each Wednesday during February for “Africans in America” film series and discussion in the Media Center. * Condensed and paraphrased from the website http://www.pbs.org/wnet/aaworld/timeline/early_01.html
