A Separate Peace – Chap. 6 Weather change – symbolic of events to come – look at the seasons and how they mirror actions in the story Little Devon River – fresh water, clean, pure Naguamsett – ugly, saltwater, seaweed, marshy Devon is like the dam that connects the Devon River (childhood, fresh memories, innocence) to Naguamsett (dirty reality of the world) Quackenbush – crew manager – he & Gene fight over “maimed” comment. Gene’s reaction reflects the anger he feels at himself Finny calls Gene, discusses sports … Gene not interested; Finny says “Play them for me.”
A Separate Peace – Chap. 7 • Gene’s “baptism” in Naguamsett River on first day of winter term – he says “fitting” (river is dirty) • Brinker takes Gene to “butt room” for “interrogation” about Finny. Gene plays along but is terrified he’ll be “found out.” • Boys help in war effort: pick apples, shovel snow • Leper goes looking for beaver dam on skis. Leper is crazy/eccentric/idiosyncratic • Boys talk about enlisting; Gene thinks seriously about enlisting • At end of chapter, Finny returns

A Separate Peace – Chap. 9 • Boys see recruitment film for ski patrol; Leper enlists right afterward • Boys look at all the battles as if Leper were in them • Discussion of “peace” pp. 123-124 • Finny organizes Winter Carnival; a celebration just for the sake of celebrating • Quote p. 136: It was his wildest demonstration of himself … it was his choreography of peace.” Relates to Finny’s philosophy of life; of trying to put events behind him, escape from reality • “…It was the liberation we had torn from the gray encroachments of 1943 … this afternoon of momentary, illusory, special and separate peace.” – Gene’s reaction to pressures of war (compare to p. 109 war simile) • Leper’s telegraph – “escaped from war”
