  1. Biology: The study of life What makes something a living thing? Canislupisfamiliaris.

  2. Why is one living and the other is not?

  3. Cells/Organization Cell-Smallest unit capable of all life functions • Unicellular- one cell ex. Bacteria • Multicellular- organism made of many cells

  4. DNA/Heredity • Deoxyribonucleic acid- carries the code for all organisms

  5. Reproduction Asexual reproduction- involves a single parent Sexual reproduction - involves 2 parents Is it essential for an individual to reproduce?

  6. Grow and Develop Organisms growas they produce MORE CELLS Organisms develop as they mature into adult organisms

  7. Obtain and use Energy/Metabolism Metabolism = the total of all chemical reactions in an organism Why do organisms need energy? How do organisms obtain energy? What reactions are going on in our body?

  8. Energy Use/Metabolism • Autotrophs( plants) – use energy from the sun to make their own food “glucose” • Heterotrophs- ingest food for energy Where does all energy come from?

  9. Energy/Metabolism Contd. • Catabolism- The process of breaking down complex substances into simpler substances • Release energy • Digestion

  10. Energy/Metabolism cont. • Anabolism- the process of building complex substances from simpler substances • Requires energy • Building up cells How do humans do this?

  11. Respond to Stimulus Stimulus- anything that causes an organism to react • Light • Temperature • Odor • Sound • Pressure • Gravity • Heat • Water

  12. Evolution/Adaptation • Evolution- Groups of Organisms will change over time in order to survive with changing environments • Adaptation- characteristics that improves organisms ability to survive and reproduce

  13. Homeostasis Homeostasis- the ability of an organism to maintain its internal environment despite conditions in the external environment. Human body temperature is……… • if body temperature rises, you sweat. • if body temperature lowers, you shiver.

  14. Limited Life Span Giant tortoise- life span = 150 years

  15. "It's older than the great pyramids, older than Stonehenge” 4,770-year-old "Methuselah" bristle-cone pine. "When Christ walked the earth it was already 2,700 years old." California, USA

  16. Mayfly – life span = one day!

  17. A Lesson in the Art of Enjoying Life! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fFnAdeaoG74

  18. Alive or Not?

  19. Is a virus living?

  20. All Living things share these characteristics. 1. Made up of one or more cells2. Have DNA3. Can reproduce4. Grow and develop5. Obtain and use energy6. Respond to their environment 7. Can change over time(evolve)8. Maintain Stable Internal environment 9. Limited life span
