  1. Can Oxytocin Cure Addiction? Australian Professors Develop Pills That May Treat SUD Can Oxytocin Cure Addiction? Australian Professors Develop Pills That May Treat SUD Can oxytocin be used to cure addiction to drugs and alcohol? A team of researchers at the University of Sydney have been trying to find the answer to it. If they are able to develop an oxytocin-based treatment for drug dependence and alcohol use disorder, it will be a major breakthrough in the field of addiction recovery. The researchers feel that oxytocin might even prove beneficial in preventing a relapse. Known as the “love hormone,” oxytocin is a powerful hormone in the human body that regulates social interaction and reproduction. The scientists have been working on a pill called “SOC-1” in response to the devastating effects of ice (methamphetamine) and many other forms of addiction affecting millions of Australians. SOC-1 mimics the anti-addictive properties of oxytocin that is known to promote bonding and social interaction. Two professors Michael and Iain McGregor – have working oxytocin-based treatment nearly a decade and they succeeded in developing SOC-1. They developed a molecule produced the same effect as oxytocin which is enough to get into the brain by crossing the blood-brain obstacle. According to the researchers, given that oxytocin itself cannot be taken in a pill form as it gets broken down by gut enzymes, or through a nasal spray as it cannot get into the brain in very high concentrations, they decided to develop a form that could overcome the challenges. university – Kassiou been the on for that small Time-tested drug to block meth relapse According to Dr. Michael Bowen from University of Sydney’s Brain and Mind Centre, so far the molecule has proven to be a powerful treatment for substance use disorders and has also shown to completely block meth relapse. As per the researchers, SOC-1 has been successful in mice experiments and has significantly brought down alcohol consumption to half, cocaine cravings by 90 percent and meth consumption by more than 85 percent. www.sovnaturaldetox.com

  2. The researchers now aim to test the drug in humans. The pre-clinical studies of SOC-1 have shown the compound to promote positive interaction. According to Dr. Bowen, one of the ways the compound might be working is by taking off the subject’s focus from drug-seeking behavior and consumption of addictive substances and instead fostering positive social interactions that are critical for one’s long-term recovery. Patient safety trials are expected to start in a few years through a spin-off company Kinoxis Therapeutics. In February 2018, Kinoxis Therapeutics had announced entering into an exclusive license agreement with the university to continue the development of a range of novel therapeutic compounds for treating addiction and related disorders. The company also announced the completion of a $3.9 million investment that was led by Uniseed, the university venture capital fund, to carry out the necessary preclinical research to ready the drug for human testing. Happy to help Till the time the innovative drug is tested and approved by the designated authorities, existing treatment modalities to treat substance use disorders, such as contingency management, cognitive behavioral therapy and medication-assisted treatment, need to be utilized by those struggling with any form of addiction.
