Types of Satire • Horatian Gentle, urbane, smiling Aims to correct by broadly sympathetic laughter
Juvenalian • Biting, bitter, angry satire • Points with contempt and indignation to the corruption of human beings and institutions.
Devices of Satire • Exaggeration / Hyperbole May picture all politicians as corrupt • Understatement (a form of irony) • Sarcasm—tell the opposite of intended meaning
