Find your elbow partner…. • Turn to your partner and help each other find the Table of Contents in your textbook.
What page is the Table of Contents located on? • How many chapters are in your textbook?
Table of Contents • The table of contents is found in the beginning of your textbook. It contains the unit headings, chapter titles, and the pages on which their text can be found. You can use the table of contents to help you locate the pages of specific topics and sections of your book.
With your elbow partner, find the glossary in your textbook. Talk about how the glossary is set up and how you can use it.
Where did you find the glossary? • What information does the glossary contain? • How can a glossary help you?
Glossary • You will find the glossary at the back of your textbook, before the index. The glossary lists and defines, in alphabetical order, each boldface key word that appears in the book. Many glossaries show the page number where each word can be found.
Turn to your partner and now find the index in your textbook. • Where did you find the index? • What does the index list?
Index • The index is found in the back of your textbook after the glossary. The index, in alphabetical order, lists the major topics and names of persons in the book and the page numbers you will find on the entries. It helps you find information quickly and easily.
With your elbow partner, find a chapter title in your textbook. • What information did you see on the chapter title page? • Read the title, what is the main idea of the chapter?
Chapter Title • The chapter title page shows the main idea of the chapter. This page can help you locate a theme or topic and the related sections. It also shows you specific sections to read, reread, and review.
Find bold face words with your partner. (These are words in dark print.) • Why are these words in bold print? • How can these words help you when you read your textbook?
Boldface Words • Boldface words appear first at the start of a chapter or section and appear again in boldface within the text. These words relate to the main idea or concepts that are important to learn. It helps introduce you to new vocabulary that you will encounter as you read the chapter.
With your partner, find one photograph and one illustration in your textbook. • What does the caption say under the photograph and illustration? • How does the caption help you to understand what the photo or illustration is about?
Photographs and Illustrations Captions • Photographs and illustrations help you collect information about a topic that the textbook does not describe in detail. They help you build prior knowledge by seeing concepts, details, ideas, and descriptions.
Find a graph, chart, or map with your partner. • What can you learn from graphs, charts, or maps?
Graphs, Charts, and Maps • Graphs, charts, and maps help you see data clearer and easier than if it were in written text. It lets you evaluate and think about the information as well as compare data.
For our last partner activity, find the review questions or assessment page at the end of the chapter. • How can this page help you?
Review Pages or Assessment • These questions help to see if you can recall the information that you learned in the chapter.
