POBJFK Research Program: Developing Lifelong Research Skills

The POBJFK Research Program provides students with opportunities to develop lifelong research skills through courses and projects in various fields. Students participate in regional, national, and international competitions and gain practical applications in science, social science, and humanities.

The POBJFK Research Program provides students with multiple opportunities to develop lifelong research skills througha series of courses designed to produce long termresearch projects in a variety of topics/fields. All courses provide opportunities for practical applications, and encourage participation in regional, national, and international science, math, social science and historical competitions

Different POB Research Opportunities The Natural Sciences investigate real world challenges using the scientific method with a focus on conducting hands-on scientific experiments • Physics, Biochemistry, Environmental Sci, Engineering, Math, Comp Sci, etc. The Social Sciences predict and explain human behaviors and psychological states through the empirical observation of society and human relationships • Psychology, Sociology, Neuroscience, Political Science, etc. The Humanities understand human reactions to events and experiences through a critical and analytical approach of literature, text, and art rather than statistical methods • Philosophy, Rhetoric, Visual and Performing Arts, etc.

Examples of Student Created Projects Natural Sciences • Green Chemistry: Synthesizing Non-Natural Oligopeptides • Creating a Thermo-Battery for Human Implantation Devices • The Effect of Nicotinamides on the Age Reversal Process of C. elegans and S. Cerevisiae • Unintended Consequences of the Opt-Out Movement: The Potential Negative Impact of Boycotting Standardized Tests on Academic Buoyancy • The Novel Volumetric Quantification of the Chemobrain Phenomenon with a Pediatric Population • The Impact of the Corporatization of Health Care on Physicians’ Perceptions of the Medical Practice Social Sciences

  6. Science Research (STEM) Courses Students work in teams to design and implement a STEM experiment over the course of the year. They will presenttheirfindings at local science fairs. Projects are designed and run in school under the mentorship of science teachers. *Explore short or long term science summer programs* Research in Practice 10th graders (½ credit, honors weighted) Advanced Independent Research 11th and 12th graders (1 credit, honors weighted) Students work collaboratively and independently throughout the year. Social Science Research Courses AP Seminar (1 credit, AP weighted) 10th and 11th Grade Students produce evidence-based arguments and investigate real-world issues by completing two in-house research projects (both team and individual) on different perspectives in the Social Sciences Combines the Advanced Placement Psychology course with a Social Science Research component. Students will be introduced to skills of conducting Behavioral Science research and experimental design AP Psychology + Research Lab (1 credit, honors weighted) 10th and 11th Grade Students will complete their high level Behavioral Science research project and complete an academic paper and oral presentation that will be submitted into a number of regional and national research competitions Social Science Research (1 credit, honors weighted) 11th and 12th Grade
