  28. Grainger Center for Electric Machinery and Electromechanics

  29. Highlights • Prof. Chapman is an Assistant Professor. • Student growth in the machines lab. • 2001 Future Energy Challenge. • High level of research activity, with four graduate degrees awarded. New research thrusts include small motors. • Major laboratory innovations in progress. • Awards and recognition for faculty and students. • At least six new graduate students will join us in the Fall.

  30. Growth – Undergraduate Program • 36 students enrolled in the machines lab course (about 15% of the senior class). • This is happening even though the Department sees a transition from electrical engineering to computer engineering. • The 2001 Future Energy Challenge, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy and the IEEE. The CEME is helping with organization and operations. 14 schools have teams. • Hybrid car program.

  31. 2001 Future Energy Challenge • The 2001 Challenge is to develop an interface for residential fuel-cell use. • The 2003 Challenge will emphasize reduction of home electricity consumption.

  32. Research Activity -- Collaborations • Advanced PWM techniques – collaboration with the signal processing group and with Motorola. • Control techniques for machines – collaboration with the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering. • Semiconductor materials for motor control and power electronics – collaboration with the physical electronics area (and industry interest). • Laboratory innovations – collaboration with Emerson • Systems-on-chip and micromachines – collaboration with the microelectromechanical systems group.
