School in the Future. Computers are revolutionizing the way we teach and learn. Will they also change the way we design our schools?.

Computers are revolutionizing the way we teach and learn. Will they also change the way we design our schools? The scene is familiar: A teacher stands at the front of a room. Children sit in the center, their seats arranged in rows or semicircles. There is a chalkboard, a wall map, and a globe. This could be a classroom in 1995... or 1895, or even 1795. Although the details may vary, school design has seen few changes in the past two hundred years.
What happens when you add a computer to this scene? A printer? A scanner, a video monitor, a telecommunications system? Designing a technologically-rich school for the 21st century means more than simply plugging in the equipment. Computer networking, video conferencing, and new approaches to learning make traditional classroom configurations impractical. The schools of tomorrow may take on shapes that will seem foreign to us today. What will these new schools look like?
Did you know... ? A growing body of research has linked student achievement and behavior to the physical building conditions and overcrowding. Good facilities appear to be an important precondition for student learning. But, according to government reports, schools in the United States need much work.
Electrical Needs in Tomorrow's Schools Forget computer labs with rows of monitors and miles of tangled cables. In tomorrow's schools, electrical outlets and communications ports would be strategically located throughout the building. Wide conduits inside walls and beneath floors would accommodate wires and cables. PLANNING TOMORROW'S SCHOOLS No one knows for certain what the future will bring. New technologies and revised theories of teaching could make the best-laid plans obsolete. How can we design better schools for tomorrow?
The Shape of Tomorrow's Schools In tomorrow's classrooms, students no longer need to face a podium, teacher's desk, or writing board. Learning stations are distributed along walls, in island clusters, or in zigzag patterns. For small study groups, work spaces are triangular rather than square. Rooms are wheelchair-friendly with wide, unobstructed passageways and low handles and switches.
Modular Design in Tomorrow's Schools Tomorrow's schools may become flexible, modular spaces. Rooms could be added to divided and reconfigured to accommodate changes in the curriculum. Portable carts would allow computers to move freely throughout the building. Movable partitions would permit teachers to shift from small to large group activities. Standardized furniture design would allow work stations to move anywhere in the building.
QUALITIES OF A GOOD TEACHER EmpathyYou have the ability to bond with your students, to understand and resonate with their feelings and emotions. To communicate on their level. To be compassionate with them when they are down and to celebrate with them when they are up. Open to ChangeYou are able to acknowledge that the only real constant in life is change. You know there is a place for tradition but there is also a place for new ways, new ideas, new systems, and new approaches. You don't put obstacles in your way by being blinkered and are always open and willing to listen to others' ideas.
CreativeYou are able to motivate your students by using creative and inspirational methods of teaching. You are different in your approach and that makes you stand out from the crowd. Hence the reason why students enjoy your classes and seek you out for new ideas. Sense of HumourYou know that a great sense of humour reduces barriers and lightens the atmosphere especially during heavy periods. An ability to make your students laugh will carry you far and gain you more respect. It also increases your popularity.
CalmnessYou know that the aggression, negative attitudes and behaviours that you see in some of your students have a root cause. You know that they are really scared young people who have come through some bad experiences in life. This keeps you calm and in control of you, of them and the situation. You are good at helping your students de-stress. Willing to LearnYou are willing to learn from other teachers AND your students. Although knowledgeable in your subject you know that you never stop learning.
Ideas to attract students More enthusiastic The teacher teaching the students should be more enthusiastic and energetic. Students like those personalities who have some interest and involvement towards the subject. Enthusiasm in handling and tutoring to the students will make them to study and pay attention in your classes so that the result will be positive. Interactive Everybody in the world has to interact with others to convey or communicate their views. In tutoring job, interaction is the most important tool to guide and uplift the students to next grade of education. With less interaction one cannot attract the students and they will get bored so that there may be some lack in the subjects you are handling.
Motivation The powerful tool to attract the students is to motivate them in all cases. Students will like the teachers who are motivating them to do the work every time. Encouragement is all they need so if you want to attract more then you should encourage them for their activities and make them to achieve better results. Surprise All the students like some surprise and it's a way to make the student to study and pay attention towards the classes. Tutor should give some gifts or prizes to the students in the class for their achievements. It will tempt them to study well and score good results. Teaching the new things with new techniques is one of the surprises to the students. Appreciation Appreciating the students in the class for their works will be the first key to attract them. Everybody loves appreciation; in particular students like to get appreciation. If you appreciate for each and every thing then your class will be more attentive, attractive and interactive.
Advocates of virtual learning believe that virtual schools hold advantages including: not being required to attend and travel to face-to-face classes and the integration digital media into the curricula. Virtual schools also give a student the opportunity to stay in school when traditional brick and mortar schools will no longer accept them. Some reasons for this could be extensive absences due to medical reasons, teen pregnancy, or for other reasons that the school system may deem distracting to the school body. Virtual schools are a great equalizer. No matter what their social, economic, religious, ethnic or physical or mental differences, virtual education gives all students the same opportunity to reach their full potential. Some virtual schools include online study groups in which students interact with each other online. Students are able to meet in these groups using Elluminate, Wimba or other means.
Unlike traditional education delivery methods, students at virtual schools do not directly interact with professors. Hence, virtual education is considered by many to be equivalent to a directed-learning program. Because students do not interact with their instructors or peers face-to-face, "lack of socialization" is often quoted, as a disadvantage by detractors. Recent anecdotal evidence provided by one virtual school from one live cyber school indicates that, while socialization may be different, it is not necessarily lacking. It is also recommended that students enrolled in virtual schools be involved in social activities outside school, much like homeschooled children. Another perceived disadvantage to distance learning is the added challenge of staying focused while in the home environment, and many students report that staying on task is the most difficult aspect of learning online.
Many students are drawn to online learning for a variety of reasons; particularly, the ability to avoid the requirement of traveling to a physical location, which may be impossible for some non-traditional learners. Critics argue that for online education to be taken seriously, online programs must adhere to generally accepted educational standards. One way that virtual schools are proving their effectiveness is the implementation of the same standardized testing that brick and mortar schools require of their students. To reduce this criticism, The International Association for K-12 Online Learning (iNACOL) has developed a set of standards released on February 21, 2008. Some believe that this is an important first step in monitoring online programs, but while every provider of education must be accredited, the quality of accreditation varies significantly. For instance, the non-profit AACSB is the most prestigious accreditation agency for business schools and no virtual schools have received accreditation by the agency.
