::innovation to application:: The Need & Opportunity • Globally, the massive growth of telephone penetration, cf China 0.5% (1990) to 80% (2010), and of the Internet (15% globally by 2010) has changed the way the world does business. The next wave of wireless – personal and object based realtime context – will enable an even greater transformation of industry • In the next 20 years, sustainability in healthcare, transport, energy and other sectors will require them to function in new ways • This transformation represents a major global opportunity but also provides many challenges, both technical and cultural • Low cost solutions are needed that can be applied globally on a massive scale • Companies need to work across traditional boundaries and mindsets
::innovation to application:: Approach • VCE is building upon existing mechanisms to • Bridge experience, culture and mindsets across industries, applying emerging wireless ICT to create new service concepts, business models & market opportunities • Accelerate such opportunities by building relationships, cross-fertilising ideas & facilitating collaborative R&D • Encourage member companies to challenge traditional thinking, to share vision, learn & innovate together, to create new possibilities • Involve new universities, SMEs and mid-tier ICT companies, thereby identifying resources and routes to rapid prototyping and development of the ideas and innovations that emerge.
::innovation to application:: Membership Changes • To allow this VCE has made changes to its membership structure, inviting new members from: • Mid-tier and SME companies • Key application industries which are facing transformation, such as health, transport and energy • Universities, to widen the breadth of academic skills available to its industrial members • These will to join its existing global operators & manufacturers, and its existing University members, enabling new things to be undertaken
::innovation to application:: Mechanisms • VCE is creating new ways of working to extend its activities, inter alia: • Sector Working Groups to bridge industries and mindsets • These will enable players within industry sectors to explore shared interests, develop new ideas and bring these forward as White Papers and Members Seminars. • Cross-Sector Group • One key to delivering global telephony & internet penetration was the adoption of common global standards. Health, transport, energy, education etc have many common requirements in terms of technical enablers – capabilities such as identity, privacy, security, location, etc • New R&D collaborative projects amongst member companies • To apply wireless ICT into healthcare, transport, energy etc • Mechanisms for BigCos to source needed technology in new ways • SMEs with relevant technologies to contribute to projects, possibly on a funded basis
