A Prewrite is… • a collection of organized ideas • a plan to be used when writing an essay, or larger paper. • a plan that includes the analysis of the prompt (T/T/P/A) • a plan that includes the Introduction (Thesis and, possibly Hook), the Body Paragraph Components (Topic Sentences, Illustrative Details, and PASSEF), and the Concluding Paragraph (Linking to the Thesis)

A Prewrite is NOT… • a rough draft (an essay written in paragraph form). • a group of circles in the middle of a piece of paper with four or five words written on it. • something that takes more than 10-15 minutes. • to be skipped. Prewriting can save you precious time and helps you organize your thoughts.

  5. What to Include“The Outline-Introduction” I. Introduction A: Hook-What is your plan to engage your reader? B: Thesis-Write your thesis statement. This statement serves as your assertion or opinion and works as a main idea for your entire essay (Your body paragraphs will support this thesis statement.).

  6. What to Include“The Outline-For Each Body Paragraph” II.-V.Body Paragraphs I - 4 A: Topic: What is the topic of this paragraph? B: Nitty Gritty Details: How will you illustrate this topic sentence? (Specific Details, Sensory Details, Quote, Statistics, etc.) C: Down and Dirty Nitty-Gritty Details: How is this paragraph relevant to your thesis statement? (Physically, Academically, Socially, Spiritually, Emotionally, or Financially)

  7. What to Include“The Outline-Conclusion” VI. Conclusion (Should not include new information; use a transition to give a feeling that this is the final paragraph) A: Restate Thesis (Consider using a simile, metaphor, or different type of sentence). B: What is your zinger? Consider using a rhetorical question.
