  1. Harmony in the Human BeingUnderstanding Human being as Coexistence of Self (I) & Body

  2. HUMAN BEING IS MORE THAN JUST THE BODY • What do we visualize when we refer to someone as a human being? • The familiar shape and structure of human body • Human features such as eyes, nose, ears etc… • Alive-ness of the person- the entity that keeps the body alive and make it operate in various ways. • The activities demonstrated by the person (seeing, talking, listening, walking etc..) • We sense the subtler activities of the person (feeling, thinking, believing, etc…) • Thus its impossible to imagine a human being- a person that is alive without these two aspects namely the body and the alive-ness (jivana)

  3. Distinct characteristics of self and body Human Being a) Self (I) b)Body Three ways to distinguish between “Self” & “Body": Time a) continuous b) temporary/periodically • Needs Quantity a) qualitative b) limited/ quantitative • Activities • Types co-existence

  4. Needs of self and body Food & water Eg. Hungry For its nourishment and each cell uses the energy from the digested food for its sustenance. (basic need of body) Body has a need for nourishment

  5. Besides food, physical facilities • The body can be damaged by continuous exposure to cold, rain or the sun. Hence, there is need for some physical facilities to protect the body like clothes and shelter. Who take cares of the body? Ans. “ I DO ” i.e. “Self” • What do I want? Or what is my need? • Trust? Do I need trust, or is it the need of the body? • Respect and happiness

  6. Needs are fulfilled by… Self Body • Lots of physical facilities – lack of right understanding – not happy • Lots of wealth – do not have right feelings – not happy • We need both: since one is the need of body and other is the need of ‘I’. Right Understanding Right Feelings Physical facilities

  7. Understanding the activities All our activities Thinking Seeing Breathing Dreaming Talking Digesting Imagining Listening Blood flow Analyzing Eating Heartbeat Understanding walking 1) self 3) Body 2) Both

  9. Self as conscious Entity and body as material Entity co-existence Human being = Self Body information The conscious entity that The material entity that desires, thinks, imagines has physico-chemical activities like digesting, heart-beats etc Knowing, assuming, recognizing & fulfilling recognizing & fulfilling I co-exist with the body. I and my body keep exchanging information

  10. Cont..... Information ‘I’ has acceptance of co-existence with the body ‘I’ directs to make available physico-chemical condition for the body Self (I) Body (conscious entity) (physico chemical entity) ‘I’ takes decisions and instructs the body Body co-exists with ‘I’ Self (‘I’) Body (Conscious entity) (physico chemical entity) Body cannot decide or instruct.
