  2. ANTIMICROBIAL RESISTANCE What is it? Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) happens when microorganisms (such as bacteria) adapt when they are exposed to antimicrobial drugs (such as antibiotics) → medicines become ineffective and infections persist in the body, increasing the risk of spread to others. Failure to address AMR could result in 10 million deaths by 2050 globally at a cost of £ 66 trillion

A world without antibiotics? • No antibiotics = 1930s style healthcare • We may no longer be able to treat certain infections such as Tuberculosis • Cancer chemotherapy and effective antibiotics go hand in hand • Our greatest medical advancements such as organ transplant and other complex surgeries may become impossible

  4. Key Messages • Always wash your hands when handling and preparing food • Never pressure your doctor for antibiotics, as antibiotics can only treat bacterial infections. Antibiotics won't cure viral infections, like a cold! • Never take antibiotics that weren’t prescribed for you. • Always finish your prescribed course of antibiotics. • Raise awareness about the issue of antibiotic resistance, and what we can do to combat it. Talk to your friends, your family, your colleagues, and your local politicians! Promote the Antibiotic Guardianwebsite - and make a pledge to do your bit to combat antibiotic resistance.

PHE Campaign for 2018: Keep Antibiotics Working • Promoting a better understanding that taking antibiotics when they aren't needed puts them and their family at greater risk • Trust their doctors and healthcare professionals advice regarding the best appropriate treatment for them • The campaign was launched on the 23rdOctober.

Antibiotic Guardian • Antibiotic Guardian (AG) is aimed at encouraging engagement on the prudent use and prescription of antibiotics with members of the public and healthcare professionals.  • What we want you to do: To slow resistance we need to cut the unnecessary use of antibiotics. We invite the public, students and educators, farmers, the veterinary and medical communities and professional organisations, to become Antibiotic Guardians. • Call to action: Choose one simple pledge about how you’ll make better use of antibiotics and help save these vital medicines from becoming obsolete.
