  1. Don’t Be The World’s “Christian”Text: I Jn. 3:3-4Scripture Reading: II Cor. 6:14-17

  2. Intro Worldliness is sin Js. 1:27 27. Pure and undefiled religion in the sight of our God and Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep oneself unstained by the world. I Jn. 3:3-4 3. And everyone who has this hope fixed on Him purifies himself, just as He is pure. 4. Everyone who practices sin also practices lawlessness; and sin is lawlessness. • Worldliness is a problem for Christians: • Christians live in the world but apart from the world. (Jn. 17:14-15; I Cor. 5:9-10) • Worldly attitudes can ruin a church and its influence for good. (I Cor. 5:1) • Worldliness is a distraction for all Christians. (Heb. 12:1) Don’t Be The World’s “Christian”

  3. Intro The world celebrates its “Christians” and persecutes true Christians (II Tim. 3:12) II Tim. 3:12 12. Indeed, all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will be persecuted. • Celebrities who call themselves “Christians” but yet endorse all manner of ungodly things are celebrated and flaunted, and used as examples for all Christians to be! The world’s “Christian” looks no different than the world, other than claiming a belief in God! Don’t be the world’s definition of a Christian! Don’t Be The World’s “Christian”

  4. What Is Worldliness? • From Webster: • “Of or limited to this world; temporal or secular; devoted to or concerned with the affairs, pleasures, etc. of this world.” From God: I Jn. 2:15-17 15. Do not love the world nor the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world. 17. The world is passing away, and also its lusts; but the one who does the will of God lives forever. • Worldliness is: • Participation in sin – walking in lawlessness. (I Pet. 4:3-4) • Given to a life of following one’s passions. (Eph. 2:1-3; 4:17-19) • Living like the world – not being or trying to be separate. (II Tim. 4:10) • Living a life devoted to the temporal – not spiritual (I Cor. 3:1-3). Don’t Be The World’s “Christian”

  5. What Is Worldliness? Many manifestations of worldliness – Gal. 5:19-21: Gal. 5:19-21 19. Now the deeds of the flesh are evident, which are: immorality, impurity, sensuality, 20. idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, disputes, dissensions, factions, 21. envying, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these, of which I forewarn you, just as I have forewarned you, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. Worldliness is against God and can cost one their soul! Don’t Be The World’s “Christian”

  6. Danger of Worldliness Why is it important for all Christians to know the seriousness of worldliness? I Jn. 3:3-4 3. And everyone who has this hope fixed on Him purifies himself, just as He is pure. 4. Everyone who practices sin also practices lawlessness; and sin is lawlessness. • It separates us from God • Js. 1:15; Is. 59:1-2 • One loses a good reputation • Prov. 22:1; I Thess. 5:21 • One loses their influence for good • Rom. 2:24; I Cor. 5:1; I Tim. 4:12 Don’t Be The World’s “Christian”

  7. Danger of Worldliness Why is it important for all Christians to know the seriousness of worldliness? (I Jn. 3:3-4) • It hinders our service to God • I Pet. 3:7; 3:12 • It desensitizes us to sin • I Tim. 4:1-3 • It hardens hearts • Heb. 3:12-13 Don’t Be The World’s “Christian”

  8. Danger of Worldliness Why is it important for all Christians to know the seriousness of worldliness? (I Jn. 3:3-4) • It leads to other sins • I Sam. 11 • It leads to disfellowship • I Cor. 5:1-13; II Thess. 3:6-15 • It leads to eternal punishment • Rom. 6:23; Rev. 20:14-15; Mt. 25:46 The danger and deceit of the world is it leads to eternal punishment! Don’t Be The World’s “Christian”

  9. Christian’s Life to Contrast Worldliness A life of holiness I Pet. 1:15-16 (Contrast with I Pet. 4:1-3) 15. but like the Holy One who called you, be holy yourselves also in all your behavior; 16. because it is written, "YOU SHALL BE HOLY, FOR I AM HOLY." • A life of purity • I Jn. 3:3; Js. 1:27; II Tim. 2:22 • Lives different than the world • I Jn. 3:4; Mt. 7:23; Col. 1:9-12; Phil. 1:27 • Will NOT continue in sin • Rom. 6; I Jn. 3; I Jn.1:9 Don’t Be The World’s “Christian”

  10. Christian’s Life to Contrast Worldliness • Will NOT condone sin • Rom. 1:32 Desires to be separate from the world II Cor. 6:14-17 14. Do not be bound together with unbelievers; for what partnership have righteousness and lawlessness, or what fellowship has light with darkness? 15. Or what harmony has Christ with Belial, or what has a believer in common with an unbeliever? 16. Or what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For we are the temple of the living God; just as God said, "I WILL DWELL IN THEM AND WALK AMONG THEM; AND I WILL BE THEIR GOD, AND THEY SHALL BE MY PEOPLE. 17. "Therefore, COME OUT FROM THEIR MIDST AND BE SEPARATE," says the Lord. "AND DO NOT TOUCH WHAT IS UNCLEAN; And I will welcome you. 18. "And I will be a father to you, And you shall be sons and daughters to Me," Says the Lord Almighty. The Christian is to be pure in conduct and “keep oneself unstained by the world!” (Js. 1:27) Don’t Be The World’s “Christian”

  11. Conclusion Worldliness plagues churches and the lives of Christians today The easy path is to become the world’s “Christian,” one who tolerates everything! • Christians must stand out from the world and that is not • always easy – takes resolve! • We all must have a willing heart to submit to God’s will in all aspects of life. • If we sin, we are to repent and strive to practice what is godly! Christians must often take a stand against the practices of the world – be ready for conflict (I Cor. 16:13) Let us all strive to live in godly conduct that our example may be for good! Don’t Be The World’s “Christian”

  12. “What Must I Do To Be Saved?” Hear The Gospel (Jn. 5:24; Rom. 10:17) Believe In Christ (Jn. 3:16-18; Jn. 8:24) Repent Of Sins (Lk. 13:35; Acts 2:38) Confess Christ (Mt. 10:32; Rom. 10:10) Be Baptized (Mk. 16:16; Acts 22:16) Remain Faithful (Jn. 8:31; Rev. 2:10) For The Erring Child of God: Repent (Acts 8:22), Confess (I Jn. 1:9), Pray (Acts 8:22)
