  2. Learning Target for this week I will understand the harmful effects of using the ‘R’ word and other hurtful words to label people with disabilities.

  4. This is what it’s all about… What When Why How

  5. WHAT The End the R Word campaign, created by youth, encourages people to pledge to stop using the R-word.

  6. WHY Much of society does not recognize how hurtful and exclusive the effects of the word retard(ed) can be. Respectful and INCLUSIVE language is a powerful way to respect all people and those with intellectual disabilities. Sherman students and staff should celebrate our inclusive community and be reminded of why we need to RESPECT EVERYONE!

  7. WHEN Schools and communities everywhere hold events each March. Sherman is celebrating End the R-word this week!!

  8. HOW Monday: You can earn Fabulous Falcons for including others and displaying acts of kindness all week. Falcons can be entered into a special drawing on Friday. Tuesday & Wednesday: With your team, read articles and stories, watching videos, talk in groups, and write about this topic. Thursday: Create a team pledge to be read at an all school assembly. Individual pledges will be displayed in the cafeteria. Friday: All school assembly lead by ELC & Fabulous Falcon drawing

  9. Let’s get to it! Everyone is unique. This activity will help you think about how we are the same and how we are different-including ways that can be seen and those that cannot be seen.

  10. Game: JOIN IN • Everyone should make a large circle. 2. Take a step into the circle if the statement read is true for you. Then step back.

  11. I Statements I am wearing sneakers. I have dyed my hair before. I wear glasses or contacts. I speak more than one language. I like basketball. It’s easy for me to make friends. I am an artist. I struggle with math. I cook for my family. I like to dance. I like to take the leadership role. I am shy. I think I am a good friend. I am a Sherman student.

  12. Wrap-Up • Did you learn anything new about anyone? • Were the groups of people that took a step into the circle always made up of the same people? • Some groups were large and some were smaller. Which did you like being a part of?

  13. Everyoneis unique and we ALLhave something to contribute.
