A motif is a reoccurring element that has a symbolic meaning. • A motif is a symbol that is repeated in a literary work. • What are some examples of motifs from literary works that we know about? What is a motif?
Good readers trace (keep track of) motifs throughout a work and record their observations. • Record observations about the following: • How is the motif used to tell the story? • How does the motif affect the plot and characters? • Readers can use this info. to understand the deeper meaning of the motif, and what it means as a symbol. How do symbols and motifs work together?
