A few thoughts put together after the dinner at Villa Grazioli (1580)… Workshop Summary and Closure J. Benveniste
Participation and WS Structure • 120 participants from 15 Countries • 33 Papers, 27 Posters • 4 Plenary Sessions • 3 Round Tables Discussions around the Workshop main themes: • Processing Algorithms up to the Geoid & Gravity Field • Solid Earth • Oceanography and Synergy b/w Gravity & Altimetry Workshop Summary and Closure J. Benveniste
Success Criteria of the WS Get people together! • GOCE Mission Users and Actors interacted • Project Status was published to the GOCE User community • National, EC and ESA GOCE activities were promoted • Scientific progress published and discussed Workshop Summary and Closure J. Benveniste
Success Criteria of the WS • All GOCE User communities (Geodesy, Solid Earth, Oceanography) interacted in plenary oral, poster and round table discussion sessions. • Clear identification of the benefit of the synergy b/w GOCE and Altimetry for Oceanography • The work in the Oceanography community needs to get organised… Oceanographers benefited most from the workshop to progress in that direction ==> need to study how to use GOCE and altimetry data together! Recommendations • Recommendations were made during the Round Table Discussions. Will be summarized by the Animators, Chairs and Rapporteurs and published in the WS Proceedings and the GOCE04 web site. Workshop Summary and Closure J. Benveniste
Recommendations • Recommendations to ESA will be scrutinized and converted into actions as far a feasible: • improvement of GOCE services and products • New algorithms and products development: Study of the synergistic use of ENVISAT Altimetry and GOCE products • User Toolbox Workshop Summary and Closure J. Benveniste
Communication and Outreach • A “Web Story” will hit the first page of the ESA Portal this afternoon • Large promotion will be made when the Proceedings are issued (before EGU!) Workshop Summary and Closure J. Benveniste
Need for another WS prior to Launch? • It seems obvious that the GOCE User community will again benefit from a 3rd Int’l GOCE User Workshop prior to Launch: • What do you say? • What should be the focus of a future workshop? • Focus mainly on Solid Earth and Oceanography? • Splinter sessions (Solid Earth and Oceanography)? • Large Poster-only session on Processing Algorithms? • Cal/Val? Error characterization? • Six months prior to launch? After the GOCE Data Exploitation AO process is concluded? Workshop Summary and Closure J. Benveniste
Proceedings • Your Oral or Poster Presentation • Please make sure we have your Poster and Oral presentation in PDF format (or PPT if you wish) for publishing on the GOCE04 web site. Upload it on the web site or give it now to Veronica. • Your Proceedings Paper • For the few of you that have not yet uploaded their proceedings’ paper on the GOCE04 web site, please do so without delay • The Proceedings should be published very shortly to serve as a working document. ESA Publication Division needs all the material now in order to keep the planned issue date of 16 April. • Do it while it’s hot!!! • The Proceedings will be published on CD and on the web site Workshop Summary and Closure J. Benveniste
Download • Download the GOCE Screen saver • Macintosh (OS 8, 9, X) • Windows • Download the GOCE Poster All on the GOCE 04 web site http://www.esa.int/goce04 Workshop photos are on the web site too! Workshop Summary and Closure J. Benveniste
THANK YOU! • The workshop is only the sum of the participants’ contributions? ==> THANK YOU! Workshop Summary and Closure J. Benveniste
THANK YOU! • Special thanks to: • The Scientific Committee • The Chairs, Animators and Rapporteurs • Veronica Arpaia and Ulla Vayrynen for their precious contribution to the organisation of the Workshop • Monica Polisano for the graphic art and the photos • The GOCE Project manager, Danilo Muzi, and his team ... on whom all our hopes lie Workshop Summary and Closure J. Benveniste
The second International GOCE User Workshop was dedicated to the memory of Christian Le Provost (1-VI-1943—29-II-2004) Christian will be remembered for the excellence of his contribution in tide modeling, mean sea level, ocean circulation and for his remarkable and invaluable participation to numerous international ocean observing and modeling programmes, WOCE, GCOS, GOOS, OOPC, GLOSS, GODAE, MERCATOR, FES, CLIPPER… ERS, T/P, Jason, ENVISAT, ESA Living Planet Programme… (and this list is not exhaustive!) The GOCE community will particularly remember Christian for his conviction of the necessity of a space gravity mission to improve our knowledge of ocean circulation and for his persuasiveness.
