God’s Sovereignty • Joshua ch 24 • V3 I took • V4 I gave • V5 I sent • V6 & v8 I brought • V10 I would not listen • V11 I delivered • V12 I sent • V13 I have given • V14 God works to His eternal purposes, and who can stop them from happening? • Such a God is to be feared and obeyed!
Covenant Renewed at Shechem • When the people promised to serve the Lord Joshua’s reply was • You cannot serve both Jehovah and worship idols too • Today you must choose who you will serve • ‘As for me and my house we will serve the King’ • The people promised to ‘serve the Lord our God and obey Him’ • This covenant was recorded in the Book of the Law • A large stone was set-up under the oak near the holy place of the Lord as a reminder of the covenant • Why? – because Joshua didn’t believe that the Israelites would be faithful • Joshua believed that they would drift away from God into idolatry.
What Does this mean to me in 2010? • Start of the New Year is a good opportunity to renew our covenant with God. • To look back and remember our salvation and to give thanks. • To look forward and re-commit ourselves to God and to what He has in store for us. • We can do this corporately now through the words of a prayer on the next slide.
Prayer of Re-Commitment • Dear God, • Thank you for sending your Son to die on the cross and to rise again • Thank you that because He died and rose again I can know forgiveness from sin and the promise of eternal life with You • Thank you for saving me and that my life is changed, renewed • Now at the start of this New Decade I promise to serve You and You only • Help me please to be obedient to Your word through the power of Your Holy Spirit. Amen
Looking Forward to 2010 • In 2 weeks we will be starting a new series called ‘Time to Grow Up’ • Studies in the book of James • James is a very practical book with • emphasis on vital Christianity • using nature to illustrate spiritual truth • unpopular subjects such as controlling one’s tongue • Plenty of material for Sunday mornings and Growth Groups
What are you looking forward to in 2010? • 2010 stretches out before us, what are you looking forward too? • Please pray that we as a church will see God’s vision for this church develop and grow • That God would bless His work here at Christ Church • For the process of seeking and finding a new minister • That firm plans for a suitable building will be put in place • Prov 29 v 18 ‘Without Vision the people perish’
