Development: bars 101 - 164 The music is based on the opening figure of the first subject 101 – 105: single G minor chord, woodwind chords and scale descending in remote key of F# minor,; violin enters with theme 103 – 114: first 4 bars of first subject played 4 times in octaves by the violins, each time at a lower pitch Harmony is chromatic 107 – 114: descending chromatic chords in bassoons

  2. 114 – 115: in E minor; violas, cellos and bassoons have theme; upper strings play a counter melody (tune against a tune) • Melody is staccato against the legato theme • Woodwind (except bassoons) give chord support up to bar 132 • Horns ad sustained notes • Bar 118: modulated to A minor • Bar 120: D minor • Bar 122: G minor • Bar 124: C major • Bar 126: F major • Bar 128: Bb major • Each time the key rises by a fourth

  3. 139 – 164: texture is reduced; 3 note first subject idea is used between woodwind and strings creating a dialogue (talking effect) • 153 – 160: forte; powerful dialogue using 3 note idea between upper and lower strings • Tension given by pedal (sustained low note) D, which moves to tonic G at bar 166
