Behavioral Development During Childhood HU Yan Dept. Child Health Care CHCMU
OBJECTIVES 1.Understand the feature of child nervous system development 2.Understand sensory and perceptual development 3.List the milestones of behavioral development
Structual development • 1)Cerebral cortex
2.Functional development Cerebral cortex: immature eg: Overstimulated get tiredsleep longer
Lower portions of nervous system: Well developed eg: Hypermyotonia Lies in flexed attitude
Functional maturation: By the age of 8 yr
Myelination and Synaptic Development • Lack of myelin
Primitive reflexes Moro reflex 紧张性颈反射 Sucking reflex Rooting reflex Grasp reflex
Neonate: immature eye muscles Focal length:20cm Attracted by human face, and stripes
1~3mo eye-head coordination 4~5mo eye-hand coordination 6~9modepth perception 1~5yr shapes & color differentiation 6yr well developed Optimal age for visual development:<6yr
Neonate:fully developed 3~4mo:ear-head & eye coordination 7~9mo: turn to a noise or voice understand the tone of voice 12mo: response to his name 1~2yr: do simple tasks 3-4yr:well developed
Taste and Smell Taste • 4 basic tastes discrimination • Crucial period for taste development : 4~6mo Smell Fully developed at birth
4 Areas of Behavioral Development Gross motor Fine motor Speech & language Social & personal (emotion) Motor
Example 1yr old boy: 77cm, 9.5kg
Gross Fine
Lifting head Newborns 2~3mo raise head to 45~60 degree 4mo turn head from side to side
Rolling over 4~5mo supine(front) to prone(back) 5~7mo prone to supine
Sitting up 4~5mo sit with support 5~6motripod position 7~8mosit alone steadily >8mo turn their body from side to side
Creeping and Crawling 5~12mo creeping (dragging himself with his arms) >12mo crawling (moving with hands & knees)
Standing&Walking 6~8mo stand with support 9~12mo stand alone for a moment walk around furniture 12~15mo walk alone 22mo~2.5yr stand with one leg
Running & Jumping/hopping 1.5~2yr learn to run 2yr jump 3~4.5yr hop
Gross motor developmental delay If they are not able to: 4mo~lift head 8mo~sit alone 13mo~stand alone 15mo~ walk alone
Plays hands 3~4mo
Transfers 6~8mo
Pincer grip 8~12mo
Scribbles 1~1.5yr
Hand skills building with bricks 1.5~3.5yr
Pencil skills 2~5yr
Fine motor developmental delay If they are not able to: 6mo~ reaches out 9mo~ transfers 12mo~ pincer grip
12walk 10 stand Head to tail 8creep 6sit up 4roll over 2lift head 0 2 4 6 8 10 12 (mo) Trends of motor development • Cephalocaudal:head to tail 0
Trends of motor development • Proximodistal:near to far
